potted Mallika mango older leaves dropping as new buds emerge

i Have a Mallika mango growing in a half barrel that i have bought in for the winter as I have done for the 2 years I have had it. i live in zone 7, about 2 weeks ago I noticed it has flushed new buds from its tips a few of them appear to be flower buds my problem is that it seems along with this new flush of growth it seems simultaneously a few of the older leaves just seem to fall without warning and some of the budding tips seem to dry up and crumble some of the leaves to me anyway appear fine but some have like black spots on the underside and some leaves have slight tips discoloration. any info on what I am doing wrong would be greatly appreciated! thanks all!

Well the tree seems a nice size for a potted specimen. The black leaf tips could be a number of things like salt burn or perhaps overwatering or even fungal spots, although with it at the tips I'm leaning towards a cultivation condition. How often do you water it and what's your fertilizer regime?

thank you!! i usually only water and fertilize it once a month, I mix 3 table spoons of fish emulsion into a gallon of water then soak the pot i did however water and fertilize it twice this month when I brought it in from outside by accident

Thanks Sapote and mangodog. I will be interested to hear if you have success delaying your fruiting season on flowers you cut. Hopefully they don't just mature faster to get back on schedule. Are you intending to cut entire trees or just a portion of the flowers to see if you can extend an individual tree's fruiting?

No big leaves on mine this year either. I did have anthracnose, though, and pretty bad for awhile: I had the tree inside a round plastic greenhouse and leaving the door open during the daytime was not enough. There were I think eight velcroed openings above but I'm too short to reach them. I think my 6'8" husband's almost too short: you have to lean over the curve of the thing and the velcro was so strong that the one time we tried, the handle you pull on for it tore off. To be fair, it was a few years old then. The problem was that water condensed on the inside of it enough to soak towels as I wiped it down every day, and the tree took a hit in that humidity. And yet you had to water it in winter because rain didn't make it in. The door tore and the company replaced the whole thing but then the pandemic hit; the whole reason for buying it was so I could go off and visit my small grandkids, but since we weren't going anywhere we took it down and I went back to my old method of multiple layers of frost covers on cold nights. So those were the drawbacks of that greenhouse--and yet. It made it so we could travel and not worry about losing fruit or the tree itself to the cold while we were gone. It's across the yard from the house, so, no radiant heat to help out there, and incandescent Christmas lights help a lot but you have to hold that heat in. The tree gradually recovered. We still have the unopened replacement greenhouse at the ready.

I had read the story of the Taiwanese dramatically increasing their yields of Irwin Mangos by attracting flies to their orchards. The one I read said that one farmer had much better yields on a part of his property that was near to a rubbish dump. He had the idea that the flies might be something to do with it, so he found fish carcases from the local fishing industry and scattered them around his orchard. I think they may have extended that into some sort of spray. I think a lot of breeding programs around the world rely on random outcrossing from cross pollination of closely planted trees. In Australia, the R2E2 variety was a result of this, but it was later decided after failure to repeat this success despite a large number of seedlings being evaluated, that this had been a very lucky result. Hand pollination was adopted because, although a very labour intensive method initially, it avoids a lot of wasted resources evaluating seedlings that aren't the intended hybrid. Now that there is more research into molecular markers it is possible to tell which seedlings are hybrids much sooner, so the random outcrossing method may be better with this technology. David

Mangos aren't from a rainforest climate. They're monsoonal, which means a hot, humid wet season (summer) with higher temperatures day and night, and a hot, low humidity, dry season (winter) with higher day temperatures and a lot lower at night. Too much humidity can cause fungal diseases so in general it's good to water the base of the plant and keep water off the leaves, especially in the colder months. Looking at the photos the mango looks good. They grow and then stop a while. New growth comes with a flush of new leaves. So it's growing normally. When your winter comes there wouldn't be much growth but still take it out into the sun each day as much as you can. Temperatures below 15C you should have it inside/warmer. It will actually survive lower temperatures, but better if warmer. A seed grown mango can take around 8 years to produce fruit. But then you can't guarantee the fruit will be much good.

i would say its probably lack of sunlight. it can only support so many leaves at one time... when it decided to grow new ones, and you brought it in, it had more leaves than it could support, and had to loose a few.

Yes... too much fish.

plants do not use organics directly. bacteria and fungi eat the organics, protozoa, nematodes and other organisms eat the fungi and bacteria... Their waste stream is the fertilizer. This takes days, or, up to several weeks. so your probably giving it more fish, before its broken all of the old stuff down

what type of soil is it ?

i would

1) stop the fish until it starts getting several hours of direct sun, THEN, use 1tbsp per gallon.

2) get 2 handfulls of soil from 2 inches deep under an old oak tree, add to your soil, under any mulch if you use it... add some woody mulch on top.

OR

use a very good compost tea, or worm tea.

first i would wait till the soil is fairly dry and flush with clear water, un-chlorinated is better.
