It'll be a Pelargonium or Geranium. I'm not sure on the difference between them.

Yes its confusing. I think all geraniums are classed as Pelargoniums, but this is a geranium. Common bedding variety.

Name this 5-lobed red flower on woody vine - please!

Looks like a mandevilla, sometimes called dipladenia. The blooms are usually pink, red, or white. Yours is striped, so I think it's a fairly new variety called 'Stars and Stripes'. I don't think they're ever yellow....the man you talked to may have been thinking of an Allamanda, which is a different genus, but a vine in the same family. It also has five lobes to its flowers. People in my area (SW Indiana, zone 6) grow mandevilla as a summer annual, but lose them with the first hard frost. I don't know of them coming back after even an average winter. I'd keep it on a sunporch and not try to overwinter it outdoors since they are subtropical.

plant Red Flowering Crab or red dogwood or redbud?
Q

Disease-resistant crabs with both showy flowers and conspicuous persisting fruits might be a better value. These are easy to grow. However, if the dogwood or redbud grow wild in the vicinity that might indicate an advantage - unless your soil in its current state is different from that which they grow in elsewhere nearby. Here is a link that might be useful: Lake County Nursery American Triumph

In my opinion it's a pelargonium - a little different from proper geraniums. Below I've posted a typical geranium flower (G. Sanguinium). Geraniums are not quite as hardy as pelargoniums, for example they generally prefer a cooler climate. You might also note a variation in leaf form. I'm not sure of why taxonomists placed them into the same 'Geraniaceae' family, but that's the way it is. By the way, once I moved mine to a warmer, sub-tropical, climate, it didn't survive.
