Is a humidity tray filled with red lava rocks a good idea?

I am wondering if using red lava rocks in my humidity tray instead of gravel is a good idea since they also hold in water?

I bought a bag of red lava rocks online to use in my soil mix, but it turns out the size of each individual rock is too big for my shohin sized plants. So this is my way of utilizing them for something :-) since the current pebbles I have in my humidity trays are small and don't really keep the pots high enough above the water in the tray.
