Do-It-Yourself Wall-O-Water
Comments (29)For a couple of years I had a garden spot away from my house, with no water supply available so if I wanted to supplement rainfall I had to haul gallon jugs of water. To make my watering efficient, when I planted my peppers & tomatoes in the spring, I dug down and buried empty gallon plastic jugs, one between each plant. I had poked 4-5 holes in the bottom of each, of course, and left the caps on until later in the summer. Once the weather warmed, and after a good soaking rain, I mulched the beds 4-6" deep with chopped leaves, being sure to cover the tops of the (so far empty and still capped) bottles to protect them from the sun since I had found that the plastic degrades and becomes brittle when exposed to the sun. (In previous years, just cultivating around the bottles inevitably resulted in my breaking the tops off by midsummer.) When the weather reached a point where I actually needed to water, I cleared the mulch away for the moment and poured a gallon of water into each buried bottle. I set the cap loosely back atop each bottle to keep the leaf debris from falling in and clogging the exit holes in the bottom, then pulled the mulch back up to protect the plastic. I did not care about how long it took for the bottle to empty-- it seemed like a gallon or two a week per plant was sufficient, and the best part is that by burying the bottles the water went right down to the root zone where it was most effective. As for using wall-o-waters, since I had gotten some free from a friend, I tried them last year with 3 really early tomato plants I started specifically to experiment with. While they survived a good bit of frosty weather, in the end the plants I had started weeks later and planted out a month after the first ones when the weather had warmed quickly caught up to the wall-o-water ones and all the tomatoes pretty much bloomed & set fruit at the same time & rate. So my conclusion is that it was satisfying to my eager gardener's soul to be out planting early, but it really made no difference in overall plant performance. I have found the same to be true with early plantings of such things as peas and salad crops, too. Early plantings may survive, but later plantings quickly catch up and may even surpass earlier ones that have been stressed by the weather....See MoreWall-O-Water vs. Do it yourself....and when to plant?
Comments (16)'Preshredded' - niiice. An aside, but related: I'm bending material to make low tunnels to support things like jnfr's gro-film, remay, etc. Some may recall I was looking for a cattle panel supplier and I bought some and started bending it up yesterday, in between fiddling with training wheels and playing lacrosse with little girls, and this is what I'm getting: and some scale: One panel can be cut to 66" length for a smaller tunnel. I'll have a 41" width, 80" length and 21" height structure. You can secure string to the bottom and run it over the top several times and this would secure any material tightly and limit shredding (so the theory goes). I also bent a piece to overwinter spinach and this larger piece will be to overwinter cabbage and greens, after I put two layers of greenhouse film in there and make a vent, and run heavy-duty row cover on the north side for extra insulation. I'll be done with this in a couple days and the soil is warming already, and my peas, potatoes, onions will go out this week and be covered by my hoops. Beware the ides of March! Comments (11)Nicole, you are very pretty! That was very interesting. Not sure how I would describe myself...oval face, lots of lines (okay, wrinkles), short gray hair but not really short, green eyes, and I smile easily. (Since I had a lot of dental work done anyway.) I had a friend named Ken, and I took care of him in the last 8 years of his life, but he was a good friend that shared many insights with me that made me look at things in a lot of different ways. One of the things that he told me....that is really pretty basic, but I just had never thought about it...a person wears their life experiences on their face. I think about it more and more, especially looking at older people. Like Nicole, I would describe myself as happy....I hope it shows on my face....See MoreDo You Make To Do Lists For Yourself?
Comments (31)I am a nut about lists. A couple of years ago I had surgery and the medication they put me on after made me very anxious. I started sitting up at night making lists. I mean 20-30 lists a night. I even made a list for a dead president...go figure. I told my doctor about it and he took me off that medication. He said he didn't want me to have to start a 12 step list program. It only lasted a few days but it was wierd....See MoreSeysonn_ 8a-NC/HZ-7
