Cassette to CD converter

Anybody have or use one of these? DH has tons of cassettes and would like to put them on CD . Anyone?!

At least 2 choices:

1. Pay a transfer service to do it.

2. Figure out how to connect the sound-out from your tape player or stereo to sound- in on your PC. Then record the stream using a free recording program like Audacity (PC) or its equivalent on a Mac (maybe Garage Band?). Then, the sound stream needs to be broken down to individual track files if so desired, and the resulting files each tagged.

I had to buy an external sound card to do this, I wasn't happy with the sound quality that resulted from using the Mic-in socket.

I did #2 on about 5 tapes as a trial many years ago. It was a time consuming and boring task, and I decided after this trial to just toss the cassettes and replace the ones I liked best with newly purchased CDs. It wasn't worth the hassle.

DS bought me a cassette to MP3 for Christmas a few yrs ago. It works well and was easy to use. Transferring takes as much time as it does to play the tape, so it is time consuming. Once you have the content on the computer it's no problem to burn it to a CD.

One solution is to purchase sofware for this purpose. I found "Audio Recorder 2.0 Deluxe by honestech" at Wal-Mart for $59. It included the hardware interface that is connected between your computer's USB port and the playback device. The playback device must have an output port such as "line out" or "a headphone jack". I haven't installed mine yet, so haven't discover if there are other issues.

sunshines- I presume you're talking about videotape, not just audiotape? There are many companies that do this for a reasonable price and you can find them in your Yellow Pages under listings like "Video Transfer," etc. If I had a whole bunch of tapes it would be most economical to invest in a hardware and software package to do this, but the last time I looked the package cost about $100 and they're not always easy to use. If you've just got a few, it's a lot less hassle to let the professionals do that. I had an old VCR tape converted to a DVD last month. I did it at the Costco Photo Finishing counter: they charge $20 for the transfer, and that includes two DVD copies. Local camera stores can do this, and you can also send your tapes off to online companies. Just Google the phrase "transfer videotape to DVD" and you'll get quite a few hits.

This reminds me that I bought a device to do that a year or so ago but haven't used it yet. It didn't lookcomplicated.....a nice winter project!
