Oklahoma Earthquakes

Did you feel it? Five earthquakes in Oklahoma today. These are relatively small quakes, but are in a region that has been historically free of quakes. (These risk maps are used for setting seismic withstand levels for proposed nuclear generating plants.) That part of Oklahoma has been regarded as a very low seismic zone on older quake risk maps.

It has been postulated that these quakes are caused by oil production activity known as water drives. Fluid is pumped down old wells to force any remaining oil toward wells located near the top of an oil dome.
