i whacked my jade plant
Comments (71)hi guys n girls well im in scotland ( glasgow) and have a jade that is around 15 years old its 2" to 3" at the base and stands about 1 foot tall ( the chineese use these as hierlooms as they can pass through many generations you can hold a plant that was grown and alive when grand or great grand parents cared for ) any way on the old lopping of bits i choped a 1" thick branch from my mother about 2 years ago and its almost the same sizeabout . i water around 2 a month to 3 times in summer and may be once a month wintter. iv never heard of black out flowering ie keep it dark for 24 hours like in a cellar like can be used to force some crops to flower early such as totties. i also repot once a year ( was told to size up in minimal scales by a chineese guy that had a 4 foot tree in his shop the trunk was around 6 to 7 : thick fantastic tree. he also suggested cracking in an egg straight to the top soil an letting the protein help the plant ( never done this ) he said let it root bound its self and the repot tightly as for the main point chop away iv rooted the leaves straight into soil to form a wild shrub type bush more leave that branches ( kinda like an easter or christmas cacti) but finnaly they grow any were if not pampred to much remember there native area ( the far east ) has very temperate climates no were near like the sunny la and california coasts never had a flower although my easter an xmass cati flower 2 3 times a year peace people...See MoreMy Newest Jade
Comments (27)Thanks for pic follow up marguerite Yes the nine month story is an American thing: Stage setting is an old town that originated prior to the American founding fathers The nine month story was told to me by my mom more than once: Me: But mom do I have to ? Mom: I carried you for nine months didn't I !!! Unless I was already busy doing what ever it was she asked of me, or I'd hear... Mom : Don't make me tell your father. Who knows one day I may even find a spot for one or two after all I kind of like these jades with new names No hurry for me though, I'm still trying to straighten out a couple of them other ones....See MoreRoot rot in jade plant I think--also is this giant thing a root?!
Comments (49)I found an absolutely beautiful Jade in a dumpster when I was tossing my trash. I pulled it out and after trimming a bit it was absolutely fantastic. I proceeded to over water it and practically kill it. It got so bad that I thought it was a goner...and then I did the unthinkable. I cut off the entire matted and ruined root ball. The whole thing. I let it air a few days and stuck it in an awful mixture of street dirt. 6-months later, it is making a huge comeback. I barely water it now and give it a shower every six weeks or so to blow away any mites or whatever crawlies happen on it. It is doing fine. I happened on another specimen with an 8-inch trunk and I broke it up to make about 5 new plants with 4-inch trunks (the 8-inch was rotting). I'm hoping to get at least 3 of those rooted using the same method. Re-rooting a 4-inch trunk gave me some confidence with Jades. They seem to be really resilient if you sorta be a little mean to them ;-)...See MoreFreezing temps have culled my jade collection
Comments (24)Update....Yesterday it was clear there was more damage than I initially thought to the two big ovatas that started my Jade interest in the 1990s. The better light showed their leaf colour was very different, branches hadn’t drooped, but the leaves were now olive green in colour, very soft and translucent. Snapping one leaf in two revealed they were just bags of burst cells and fluid. Losses so far seem to be 2x C Compact, 1x Red Horn, 1x medium ovata, 1x tricolour, 1x Gollum, 2x Hobbit, 2x Hummel’s Ghost, 1x Solana, plus damage all over to one old/largest ovata and partial damage to it’s twin. All but the partially damaged ovata have been cut right back to bare stems and trunks to see if they can resprout. To be honest though, I’m expecting more cutting back over the next few days or weeks as stems receed even further. I have only myself to blame for not taking better heed of the advance weather warnings that were in place for the ‘Beast from the East’ as this bad weather episode was named. Lesson learnt the hard way! No worries, at least my family were eventually all back safely in their homes from being in the wrong part of the country at the time when the extreme conditions hit due to various reasons. They managed to work from home in some cases as schools were closed. Gill...See Morerooftopbklyn (zone 7a)
