A Heating Pad is NOT a seed starter mat...
Comments (20)I agree with Karen on using heating pads meant for reptiles. I have a left over heating pad that we used for my daughter's pet hermit crab and I've converted that into a heating pad for brug cuttings...to help promote some healthy roots growing in soil. I've gotten good results and it seems safe. It emits enough warmth, but doesn't appear to be a hazardous threat if used safely. I have some cloth between it and the pot to absorb any moisture from overwatering....See MoreHeating Pad
Comments (21)Backyardmomma, that's what I tried first! But I could never feel any warmth coming from it. I tried all 3 blankets that I had, turned the thermostat all the way up, the little button lit up, but none of them warmed up under the trays. I felt warmth in some parts of the blanket, but not where it mattered. What's up with that? DH said maybe it was another "safety feature", but I couldn't figure how the blanket could've been engineered to know that was plants on it and not a person. I'm 61, and they just don't make things like they used to. Oh, Dawn, I know, maybe there are less fires now. DGS, the one that lives with his mom, not the one that lives with me, set his room on fire last summer. He left a box fan running, apparently sitting on top of his bedside stand. After he went off to school, one of the cats or dogs must've knocked it over onto the bed. Set his bed on fire first, then spread to the rest of his room. Burned up his brand new sneakers and most of his clothes (of course they were probably all scattered around on his floor). Luckily, his mom was home and smelled the smoke. All their possessions smelled of smoke and of course the house was not fit to live in and they had to move. They are renters so it was just their personal effects. I sure hope their landlord had insurance. DGH learned a valuable lesson. I thought it was kind of like Karma. He's usually pretty careless and could have set his room on fire when he lived with us except we caught that he had opened the box on his ceiling fan and taped two wires together with masking tape, before anything awful happened. Gee-min-eee, these teenagers! --Ilene...See MoreWould an electric blanket work for bottom heat?
Comments (17)Not sure if I can explain this setup, but I saw one in a mom and pop greenhouse that worked like a charm. "Pop" built a wooden box with a "bottom" midway of the height. In other words, if you turned it upside down it looked the same as right side up. She had damp sand in the top half and a heat source suspended underneath. It had a lid to hold the heat in until the seed started to germinate, then they were removed to a bench with plenty of light. A plastic cover with lights above it for propagation should work as well. Heat source could be a light bulb or a very small heater (milk house heaters have thermostats) on low setting. Just have to play with it to get the temp right in the sand. I must say that I would not risk doing any of these things in the house. Her's was in a greenhouse....See MoreElectric blankets vs. mattress pad
Comments (11)Hi rnmom. Below is my recent addition to my post on the other side that forboystoo linked. Check the last sentence...it may apply to you or others here. *********************************************** Hi all, Wanted come back and tell you I found a perfectly suitable blanket at JCP. It's a Serta brand and unlike the Sunbeam from Costco, it does heat quickly and well. I love that it's light weight( maybe due to cheaper materiel...I don't care!) and doesn't add much weight under my lovely, floaty down comforter. FYI, I got a queen for our king bed, just to have less to deal with. the length is fine, and there's very little over-hang on the sides and that suits me perfectly. I also realized why I prefer a blanket to a mattress warmer. I can get away from the heat, instantly, whenever I want....See Morebusybee3
