Roses Arrive Tomorrow - Rain For Days :(
Comments (13)Mori - potting them is possible, but means I'd have to go and purchase pots etc. I don't have anything readily available - I just started re-gardening in a new home after a long period of not gardening. I had to move to an apartment for several years and of course, had to get rid of all garden accessories (well actually my ex, got to keep all that stuff since I had nowhere to keep it all *makes sad face*). Krista - I'm leaning towards your idea of keeping them in the plastic they arrive in/box, etc. and putting them in my basement most likely, which will be the coolest place I think. It is supposed to warm up a bit next week with the rain, and I suspect my unheated basement might be a better area for them, than even my detached garage where it may get too warm....See MorePhotos of Rain-soaked Beauties, as promised......(long)
Comments (17)THANK YOU to you all for taking the time to respond to my post. I am delighted that I was able to still get some nice photos here and there to keep the beauty alive for months to come. Even thought the majority of blooms were lost, there were still some little 'miracles' in the garden, for which I am grateful. roseberri....First of all, thank you for your kind comment. Geshwind's Orden truly wants to be a climber, but I don't have climbing space where 'he' is so I have him pegged down in a circular fountain-shape which seems to agree with him so far. But he isn't a small shrub and grows very lanky and up, up, and away. There is only one bloom in June, but it is prolific. It will get some blackspot later in the season without spraying, but during its bloom time it is quite healthy. (I don't spray my old roses). I like how the inner petals are a deeper pink than the outer ones. Its quite pretty. sherry....Leda IS one cool chick. I love how her white flower emerges from a blood-red bud, showing just a trace of red on the petal edges. I don't know if she would be happy in FL or not since she actually seems to enjoy my cold weather. Anybody else know? aliska....My Madame Plantier has never repeated. She is strictly once-blooming here. I didn't know she could repeat. But then a lot of roses that supposedly repeat, don't always here (too short a growing season perhaps?). Of my roses listed above, the only repeaters are Paul Neyron, Mrs. John Laing and Louise Odier. I have heard it said that John Hopper 'can' repeat, but mine hasn't so far. To All.... Today it was (gasp!)...SUNNY! All day long, nothing but blue above and warm sun shining down. The old roses are mostly done for and the deer returned again last night to munch yet again, and I saw the first japanese beetle today...but it was SUNNY!!!! YAY! It doesn't take much to make me happy. Celeste...See MoreYeeee Haaaaaa....rain, rain, rain.....:)
Comments (8)I'm delighted that you all got rain. In north Walker County I didn't even get ONE DROP!! I work in Bham and it poured - couldn't even see the building across the street. I could have cried when I got home. A branch on one of my Bottlebrush Buckeyes is already turning gold - everything is shutting down early. I'm about ready to bushhog the whole yard and spread gravel to keep the dust down! Linda...See MoreCutting Roses in the Rain
Comments (24)Well, the wet roses prevailed at the Orange County Rose Society Show. It was a small show of good quality, and it was well attended by some of Southern California's finest exhibitors. Trophy winners included Cal & Barb Hayes, Gerry & Gloria Youngewirth, Bob & Kitty Belendez, Carl Mahaney, Brenda Landers & Joe Smith, Lynn Snetsinger, Cliff Orent, Evelyn Reed & Paul Jackson, Denise Pulley, and yours truly. The weather did take a toll on a lot of the blooms, and I was shaking water out of blooms even as they were on the trophy table. It took arts & crafts and a lot of extra work to trim off red water spots on the light colored roses and white water spots on the red roses, and to make them show worthy. But in the end, some beautiful roses and collections adorned the trophy table. Some of the royalty winners included: HT Queen: Gerry & Gloria Youngewirth (Cajun Sunrise) HT King: Gerry & Gloria Youngewirth (forgot the rose) HT Princess: Bob & Kitty Belendez (Hot Princess) HT Court: Suzanne Horn (Veterans' Honor) Gerry & Gloria Youngewirth (Louise Estes) Lynn Snetsinger (forgot the rose) Mini Queen: Gerry & Gloria Youngewirth (Dancing Flame) Mini King: Suzanne Horn (Butter Cream) Mini Princess: Suzanne Horn (Merlot) Mini Court: Brenda Landers & Joe Smith (Nancy Jean) Mini Court: Suzanne Horn (Bee's Knees) Mini Court: Suzanne Horn (Erin Alonso) Mini in Pic. Frame: Evelyn Reed/Paul Jackson (Bee's Knees) Cal & Barb Hayes Challenge: Cal & Barb Hayes Mini Box: Cal & Barb Hayes (Incognito) Vase of 6 HT's: Bob & Kitty Belendez (St. Patrick) Mini Spray: Bob & Kitty Belendez (Green Ice) 3 Mini Sprays: Suzanne Horn (Marriotta) Floribunda Bloom: Lynn Snetsinger (Francois Rabelais) Cycle of Bloom: Lynn Snetsinger (Gemini) Hi-Lo: Suzanne Horn (Big Time & Doris Morgan) Shrub Challenge: Lynn Snetsinger (The Squire & Symphony) Modern Shrub: Lynn Snetsinger (L.D. Braithwaite) Seedling: Cliff Orent Polyantha Spray: Cliff Orent (forgot the rose) Vase of 3 Minis: Suzanne Horn (Bee's Knees) Mini Single: Carl Mahaney (forgot the rose) Rose in a Bowl: Lynn Snetsinger (Moonstone) Mini Rose in a Bowl: Lynn Snetsinger (Erin Alonso) Victorian: Cliff Orent Dowager: Bob & Kitty Belendez (The Green Rose) I could go on, but I'm forgetting so much. Look for the full results shortly on the Pacific Southwest District webpage. In the interim, kudos and congratulations to the OCRS Show Committee who did an absolutely outstanding job of hosting this lovely show once again in the lovely setting of Rogers Gardens.
