I use the hydroculture method on most of my hoyas. I'm too cheap to buy the containers specifically made for doing hydroculture, and I'm not sure they would be large enough for growing hoyas if I did. The biggest problem I have run into is finding plastic pots, especially hanging baskets, that don't have holes. Saucers are ok, as well as self waterers, but they are limiting as to how much water one can put in the reservior. Until I solve this problem, it's almost more trouble than using soil (but I'm working on it). Having said that, I don't know if I'll ever go back to a soil type subtrate. I know there are others on this forum that use hydroton. Maybe they would like to chime in. Sande

I have one large, ancient Hoya, which I believe is Hoya carnosa. I can not be certain of this tentative identification since it has been a long time since it bloomed and my memory may be flawed. I rescued it from the trash can about 20 years ago and it only had a few stems with dry, almost, but not completely, lifeless leaves. Now, it is huge--so much so that it is hard to get it outside during the summer, hence the lack of flowers. I understand that probably everyone who grows hoyas has this one, but if anyone wants a slip, or 2 or 3, I will be happy to share either at a hoya swap or the fall plant swap. Just let me know. I plan to move it outside under a shade tree this summer so perhaps it will bloom this year. It has a very strong fragrance. Alice

I wish that plain old nicotine sulfate ('Black Flag') was still available. I've considered making my own nicotine tea, but am concerned about TMV transmission. I am a proponent of putting all affected plants in an enclosed space like a bathroom, and using a flea bomb, per instructions. It seems to work like a charm, and kills a fairly wide range of insects. I imagine that if you treated bare root plants this way, it might even kill root mealies? Has anyone else tried this? Rick in CT
