Comments (7)Now Dave - you're really asking for TOO much! ...I say, go for the 'suspected' cancer of the something approach - it's a foolproof strategy - for every libido. One can abrogate ALL responsibility in life, with the added promise of sympathy conjugals, or one's favourite boiled sweets..ie, if the former has degenerated into a pointless,clammy, exertion.. Comments (6)Plant leaves are basically solar collectors. When plants are young, they have fewer leaves, and thus less surface area to collect energy. So, early on, you could wait until a few leaves have grown a bit. But, as others have said, as the leaves get older, they gather dust, damage, and there is diminishing returns. From the plant's perspective, its entire goal is to flower and produce seeds. If you do not begin to harvest leaves at an appropriate time, the plant gets 'comfortable' with what is has and it can switch stages from leaf growth, to root growth and energy storage for flower and seed production. So, in the beginning, yes, you can wait... but, as the other commenters have pointed out, don't wait too long. Comments (39)I second the request for the Chocolate Bread Pudding. There's not really any "must have"s here but I miss a few things: My godmother always made lefse and dinner rolls. They were both excellent. That poor sweet lady made them every year up until maybe a year or two before she died, and she was mid-90s when she died. And making homemade yeast rolls was plenty of work for people who have ever done it the old-fashioned way, and no, she didn't use a "Kitchen-Aid"! She got weaker in her old age and less able to stand for the long time. But she knew how popular they were and she always wanted to do it. And most of the time until her latter years, she'd walk to the grocery store (I'd guess maybe 1/2 mile away!) What a trooper! RIP my dear, you're missed in SO many ways! Making lefse is not easy either, especially by yourself! In the later years she couldn't roll it as thin as she used to but still gave it her best shot and it still was a treat. I've made lefse a few times. Should give it a try again but my limitations probably would affect it. And I can buy decent stuff from a couple places so I can still have a memory and a treat. Also my cousin used to (probably still does) make excellent iced sugar cookies. But the local "produce" store makes some that are pretty much identical so that fix is taken care of and even Lofthouse cookies are an adequate substitute. As far as other dishes, I can be pretty flexible but I have, in the past few years, been making a BBQ bacon ranch corn that I really enjoy and I'm getting back to really enjoying turkey again so I usually get a smoked turkey breast. Probably 20-30 years ago I started my own semi-tradition of having a "themed" holiday. Guess I got a little tired of the always-turkey or always-ham meals. One year it could be "comfort" foods, another "Italian", another was "diner" food, etc. And I always tried to add a new dish that I wanted to try that I hadn't made before. Keep some staples in there in case it didn't turn out. But it became quite popular with guests. And when the GFs didn't have to cook they always appreciated it no matter what I made! Comments (27)I don't know. That board is no different to me than a cheese board or a charcuterie board. Or, in fact, those veggie or fruit trays that seem to be at every event involving food. Having the choices on all different serving dishes might be less overwhelming to people who get overwhelmed by such a sight, but hygienically, its no different if people are all picking off one board or if a bunch of people are picking off a bunch of little dishes. People are still picking over the same food. I avoid any sort of potluck or similar type thing, because i think people are gross. Whether or not its piled on a wooden board or in individual plates or each item, seems the same to me, ick-wise anyway. The whole "board" thing is a new trend. I have seen taco boards, bagel boards, dessert boards, breakfast boards, sandwich boards, (formerly known as sandwich trays), etc. While butter boards seem dumb and messy, they are not any grosser hygienically than a bowl of dip served to a mass of people. And I suppose I am in the minority here, as I find the board posted to be more aesthetically pleasing than I would if each item were plunked down in separate, plain white plates or bowls, looking stark and desperate.............See Morewildchild2x2
