I have a limited list of charities I donate to and if they call me, I will tell them not to call again, and will take them off my list. Consumer's Union use to do this all the time. Stores want my cell phone, and I just say NO. Even though my husband passed away 2 years ago, I am starting to get mail address to him at my new address. Trash!!! I also have had a few charities that we never gave to send stuff addressed to him.

Any other interesting calls/mail?

Oh yes, had a letter from a religious origination addressed to my daughter, with her maiden name wanting money. Gosh, she is married, and in her 50's Wonder what mailing list they are using;?

It took a while to get the junk mail under control. You need to send an opt-out letter to places telling them not to release your information for any marketing or promotional things, all the utilities, the City, County, banks, any credit card or store you use and most anything else, including charities. It worked well for me. I sent them to everyone probably 10 or 15 years ago and it really cut down the junk mail. When I would send a donation to a place I included an opt-out letter. I even put an opt-out order onto my fax cover page and on business email disclaimer when I fax or email places. I apparently scared the City pretty good with it. I went in to pay my water bill one time about a year or two ago and asked for the amount and they got all flustered. "There's a note on the account to NOT give out any information to anyone!" LOL They called the City Manager who said to get my ID so they know it's me and they could give it to me. I liked that.

Only a cynical fella'd be glad that his city didn't know him ... when he called to tell them of a power outage, etc.

I moved in with my mother several times in her later years to help her after surgeries, and it was a learning experience for both of us. She had set up really complicated but to her (logical) routines about how she did everything from feeding her cats to doing her laundry. Actually her housekeeping put mine to shame. She accepted readily that I would not be doing things exactly as she did. And because of that after she gained her independence again, she altered her daily routines somewhat so that it would be easier on her and seemed to adjust. This isn't the same issue you have, however. I guess I'm getting at it's amazing how routines have to change to accomodate disabilities and the changes are to the caregiver as well as the care getter. It's all about making life as simple as it can and still meeting needs. As Pidge related, my g'mother was blind. She lived alone with my mother's help, but I remember what an issue putting absolutely EVERYTHING back in its place was. My mother knew the routine, but it didn't come from osmosis. That comes with time and my mother did figure out all sorts of ways to make it easier for g'ma, and that in turn took more of the burden off Mama. I do know, with my mother, and also with my g'mother it's ALL ABOUT fostering as much independence as possible for the disabled person. I firmly believe in our society we sometime shoot ourselves in the foot by not figuring out ways to let the disabled do as much as they can for themselves, and all in the name of trying to do the right thing. Most people want that independence. LOL. I can only imagine how frustrating something as simple as getting to a pencil must be.

If you are going to have a greenhouse that you need to use in colder temps, please think about installing a simple geothermal system (dig down into the ground, insert some plastic tubing that will vent into the greenhouse) and let the temperature of the earth maintain stasis inside. You can also put any large water containers around the outside or in the center of the inside, painted black to collect more heat during the day. Extending and improving the function of your greenhouses will become a necessity in the coming years. Google "geothermal heat for greenhouses" - you'll get a zillion hits. While you're at it, Google "permaculture". You'll need that knowledge for the future as well. When this country reaches 9 billion population (we are at 7.5 now), we will top out our ability to feed everyone. You should know how to grow your own and hopefully have some left over for others.

Caroline, we applied by phone. My son did it the first time online and it went through, but he got the wrong plan, Bronze. (He's young, always had employer insurance) No payment at the time. In December we called MP and I was able to get him the Silver plan, and MP canceled the Bronze. We had no problem doing it. Two weeks later he received cards and book for the Bronze plan. A day later he received the Silver cards and book. It was mid Jan. when I asked him if he ever got a statement from BCBS for Jan, and he said no. We've always had BCBS so I know how it works. I called BCBS that day wondering where his statement is, that's when I paid by credit card on the phone & given a con. #. Both BCBS & MP recognize he did pay. He was able to get a prescription two weeks later, using the Silver plan. It was last week when he received the cancellation letter. Part of me thinks they tried applying the payment to the old Bronze plan. The supervisor at BCBS last week told me she thinks the guy who switched plans for me in Dec. didn't follow up on it. But that doesn't make sense because he received the cards from BCBS. BCBS and MP are both confused as to what happened. What bothers me is if my son were to become ill, or have a serious illness/accident, he's not covered. And no one will take responsibility. I need to talk to someone who can get the ball rolling NOW, instead of being at the mercy of the "representatives." God bless them, they do what they're only trained to do, but this is over their head. Forgot! When I talked to BCBS yesterday I told them they paid for a prescription, so they must have information on DS's insurance. She said that would be the Claim's Dept. I asked her to please contact them and they could tell her something...anything! She said she can't do that. I was shocked. I guess it's part of the "It's not my job" thing. ETA: More twilight zone. The supervisor at BCBS (last week) gave me her first name and phone number to contact her if I had a problem. When I called her yesterday morning the number had been disconnected! The representative I talked to later said the supervisor probably worked at another center. But still....disconnected?

I had the same experience as bob_cville...got a letter from IRS and had to call them. No other option. I receive SS survivor's benefits and the letter said I may qualify for more $ on my own retirement account, so I may want to apply for retirement benefits. It's possible to look at potential benefits online, EXCEPT if you are currently receiving any SS benefits. It sounded good to me, until the 75 min wait on hold- and the person I talked to couldn't help me, she was only able to make an appt for me to apply. That was in early May, the first available appt is July 5!! And if I have to cancel or move it, I have to call and wait on hold for another hour or more; it's crazy making. Then 2 weeks later, I received a letter saying that my application for SSI was denied. I never applied for SSI, it was not mentioned in my conversation with the agent....(I know I wouldn't qualify, so would never have applied for it). What a total waste of govt resources to send me that letter.

Last night at 8:30 I got a call. It sounded like a live caller that said my name in a questioning way. I said, "yes." Then a recording clicked on. First time I've had a live voice, then a recording. It's outrageous to be disturbed this way.

The credit card thing used to call me and one time I waited till they said push something for a live voice. I talked to a lady and she asked if this was so and so, and I told her no and that I did not have a credit card. She said I will take you off of our calling list and since then I have not gotten any more calls. I don't know if this would work each time, but it did for me.

years ago I bought some raffle tickets off someone selling them on behalf of a charity who came to my work. I was working reception and was busy so just bought a couple of tickets to get rid of them. It opened up a whole can of worms. They definitely sell these lists (they have your address and phone number in case you win!) and I started getting calls from a myriad of charities selling things or asking for donations and places on behalf of various charities. I learned to never buy those damn raffle tickets again from anyone!

OJ, If I called the City for a power outage, they'd probably say Why don't you call the POWER COMPANY?????" :D Gas outage would call the gas company, (gas leak - call 911), telephone outage - the phone company (ironic, I know). If there was a City water or sewer issue, that would go through the City. And it's not to be unknown to the City (or other entities), it's to keep the City (and others) from selling, bartering or giving my name, address, credit info, etc to others who want to try to sell me stuff or scam. Even the Department of Motor Vehicles will sell your info if you don't opt-out.

Oh, right ... many of your power utilities are private.

Our provincial premier is planning to sell off a large chunk of our provincial electric utility to private agencies (to subsidize some needed infrastructure refurbishment) ... which wasn't mentioned before the election last year ...

... and there's being a he!! of a row being raised over it.

An evaluation agency over provincial financial affairs has just brought in a report claims that it'll prove to be very costly in the long run.

Sort of like a farmer who, not making enough current income to manage, figures s/he's getting along fine ...

... having sold ten acres last year.

Not a good idea, if you're under about at least 60.

i just toss,toss,toss junk mail. If paper, i'll put in my recycling box. I shred any "pre-approved" credit card offers. There are a few catalogs I like to look at. They end up recycled eventually.
