Bluebirds in the Fall (Michigan)

This is my first year and I got two broods from the same pair. Now they come back to bathe and roust on the rain gutter and take turns investigating the house they occupied this summer.

They aren't building a nest but I'm not sure why they continue to go in and out of the house unless they're just curious. Is this normal? Will they stay for the winter in Michigan?

We have bluebirds, usually 2 broods each year in our boxes. It is not at all unusual for them to continue to visit the boxes...even the juveniles. I saw some do this today, but they don't nest until spring. They did not always winter here, but In recent years they have stayed and use our feeders (sunflower seeds and suet) and heated bird bath, along with the other birds. This is NH and we often have a lot of snow and cold too! Here's a picture from last winter:

Lisa I have the back of the box taped up. Should I tape the front door? I want to check to see the final egg count, but I think it would be best to not open the door and let in cold air. Yep, I have 10,000 mealworms coming probably today or tomorrow. Will the eggs freeze? It is still very cold and as you know we are getting snow this weekend. I need to get another hosp. too. He keeps changing nest boxes and I can't find the other VanErt trap so I keep going back and forth with the one trap. Anyway, I don't think I will open the box anymore. I guess I will know how many eggs she laid when I see them fledge :) Karen

When do you start your fall lettuce in Michigan

I’d probably wait until the beginning of next month. You can grow lettuce in the summer as long as you give it shade (after it sprouts) and lots of water to prevent bolting. I’d also stick to leaf lettuce such as ‘Grand Rapids’, which is always a reliable producer.
