Winter moth prevention in the Fall (aka now)

Hi folks - live in eastern Mass. Over the years I've seen people apply wraps or tape around trees in the fall to prevent winter moths from climbing the trunk to the upper branches, causing the springtime infestation of little green "inch worms" that defoliate. (at least I think this is how it works.)

Any advice on what I can do this time of year to help protect trees from these guys? Yes I realize that there is probably no complete eradication, especially when neighboring trees, wooded areas are not treated. But we only have a few trees on our property so I thought worth trying. Don't want to use the systemic stuff as one of the trees is a McIntosh apple tree, which we eat...

Is there a special tape or cloth or other home material we should use that is effective? or any other fall-time treatment advice greatly appreciated.

Many thanks!

Brad
