Pendant lighting placement over kitchen island
Comments (0)Hi everyone, I've been a long time lurker and occasional poster on this site and always find excellent suggestions here. I was wondering if I could have some advice on where to place pendant lighting over our kitchen island (with raised breakfast bar area). We ordered 3 pendant lights but am not sure where we should hang them. I'm attaching a link to the floor plan of my kitchen for reference. The island is sort of a stretched L-shape, so the placement is causing us some confusion. Specific questions I have are: 1) Do you center the lights over the work/prep area or over the raised bar area? 2) How high to do you hang the lights (how much space between counter/bar and bottom of light?) 3) Do we spread the lights out or have a closer grouping of 3 lights on one side of the l-shape? If the shorter grouping, which side - sink side or the other side? 4)How far apart do you place the pendants? Thanks so much in advance! Comments (3)I chose the pendant color after the cabs, counters and sink were in. I bought pendants in a couple of different finishes at the local big box, and carefully held them up to see which I liked. Then I carefully repacked and returned them. It was a lot easier to choose the color when I could see it in the space. I did this with the hardware, too, and I was surprised that the finish I expected to use didn't work. So keep an open mind - there might even be other options in the "gray or black metal" family that could be perfect....See MoreKitchen Island - Pendant lights and recessed lights?
Comments (1)We like to put one (or more) recessed lights around the island if it includes a work surface (sink or cooktop). The recessed light should be switched separately from the pendants so that it can be turned off when not needed....See MorePendant lighting size for kitchen island
Comments (16)Thank you, but I don't consider it a poor design. It's what I wanted and what will fit in the space allowed. What you all don't realize is that it is an L shaped in-law apartment above a garage in my daughter's house. I have no need for a stove, I don't cook much. Portable devices are fine for me and if I want to do anythinig else I can just run downstairs to my daughter's kitchen. I would only put 2 seats there anyway, and if that's not comfortable, I only NEED one for ME. And yes, that is not the question. I just want to know if the lights I picked are too big. I've seen plenty of pictures on this website with large pendants over small spaces. So, general concensus.. yes 3 lights will look fine or no they are too big... simple, no? And the 3 holes/connections have all ready been put in the ceiling for the lights. It's a plaster ceiling so I will be sticking with 3 lights. I'll just pick something out that is smaller in width & length....See Moreamylachney
