Pictures? What kind of other lighting will you have in the kitchen and what do you need to light, at the island? How large is the island? My monorail 'chandelier' comes down 28" from the ceiling, has 8 lights and just barely ekes out enough light. If you want to sit there and read, for example, you will want to make sure you have sufficient light.

We have wrap around porches all around the house, so not much natural light.

Oh, and for use....just workspace for cooking, baking, school projects, etc.

I would contact either a lighting company that carries the light or the manufacturer to see if additional chain is available. It frequently is.

Pretty, but hard to keep clean.

That's a pretty fixture, but keep in mind the light and shadows that may be cast by such a fixture. We had some pendants in our last house that had art glass shades and although beautiful, they cast an orangey colored light around the room that drove me bonkers. In my experience, the clear bulbs required by the pendant you like tend to be more shadow-causing than I like.
