I predict a chair crashing into the glass when that chair is scooted back. But it is definitely a beautiful piece of art.

I like the art, but I think it looks off in that spot and makes the space look cluttered.

how would your table look with two chairs on each long side and none on the ends? Then no worries (at least with 4 people at the table) about chairs bumping the art.

If you decide it's too cluttered, I think you could remove the art around your cabinet and keep the large piece.

From the first view I don't love it there. But in your panoramic whole house view it sorta fits! I agree with moving the end chairs if possible. And the great thing with art...it can be moved if it doesn't work for you.

And I love your couch.

I can see why you like it there. It is a lot better than I thought it would be. However, I don't think that spot actually does it justice. The piece is also much grander and nicer than it appeared out of scale, and low and behind a chair I think diminishes that grandness. Also, Oly makes a very good point about the possibility of a chair being pushed into it, or a person in fact.

Ohhhhh nuts.

While having my first cup of coffee this morning, it hit me that it DOES visually clutter the space. DH agrees. So we'll try it in the library as per the original plan. You know I just HAD to try it where I first thought I'd use it though! ;-)

Oh, and what you can't tell from the pics is the the end chairs are massive arm chairs while the ones on the side are just straight chairs without arms.

I love it! Maybe you should just try to get used to it first since you're not use to it anything being there?

I agree with Tibbrix that the space doesn't do it justice. It should be hung where you can really see all of it and admire it!

I didn't comment when you posted earlier, but I did not think it would work there. But I think it looks GREAT there - you have great instincts and vision - don't second guess yourself.

I actually like it there, a lot. I think more people will see it, than the library. Not that that should be the deciding factor, but still.

I like the level at which it is hung, but not in that location.....probably would not hang anything below that row of glass block as they function as a very busy design element on their own.

I'm torn! Last night I thought that was the PERFECT place for the painting, but this morning it just hit me all wrong. As I sat and drank my coffee in the living room, my eyes wandered around the space and I just had an unsettled feeling every time I looked over in that general direction. I know I'm not used to something being there, but there's still just a gut feeling that it's not quite right there. Two words keep coming to mind: Visual clutter. That's what I really want to avoid in this house if at all possible, and I do go back to believing that the wall should be left mostly open to give "breathing" room. I might still look for a cool Native American spear or something else long and narrow to go just below the window ledge though.

DH brought up a good point that I hadn't considered, and that is that we should hang the painting in a place where the cats are not likely to get to it. It's very near their food dishes in the dining room, and Molly is a notorious scratcher. Because the painting has that trademark Lee Reynolds "sand" texture to it in a number of places, she may think that's where she needs to sink her claws. Probably better safe than sorry.

You should have seen us trying to fit this thing in DH's vehicle though. It was like putting in a piece of jigsaw puzzle that just didn't quite want to GO, but we finally got it in and drove 40 miles home with the front seats moved forward as far as they would go, and knees all scrunched up. Not pleasant. When we got home, we had a heckuva time trying to unload it, as it didn't want to come OUT the way it had gone IN. It was packed in the back of a Toyota FJ with barely an inch to spare anywhere!

I like it there!! I would leave it for awhile, get used to it, then see what makes you happy. I move stuff around all the time, maybe after a few months you will want it somewhere else, maybe it will be there forever. It's all ok, try not to think there is only one perfect option.

Ha! I have often said this very thing to my DH who has this fear that he's going to "knock into something." It dawned on me only recently that he probably has a different spatial experience than I do, because he's a big guy (well, he isn't Jabba the Hutt; he's a body-builder). He knocked things off a shelf in the bathroom in our old house often enough that I secured them with earthquake putty.

What a great piece. I also love the dish on your dining table. I do like the proportions there, but a spear would look great too. The only thing that bothers me is far down it goes past the chair, its a bit awkward in that way.

It occurs to me to try it on the stairway wall, as there's nothing there. DH has already said he doesn't WANT anything there (that whole "knocking into things" worry), but I think it's worth a try to see how it might look.

Another vote here for the stairway.

I refrained from weighing in earlier because I recognize I lean so much to the "less is more" side. Many would say I under-decorate. And I appreciate how different things translate from a picture to actually being in the space.

But I get the sense that in the dining area its presence doesn't leave the eye a place to rest. Thinking of your table set for a nice dinner w/ place settings & serving dishes, etc. seems it would just be too much to take in & appreciate.

Before you put any holes in your wall, take some green painters tape and tape out where you think you want to put it. I think it will look great on that wall.

I think the new one should go where the horse with green background art is hanging, the colors would be great there, and the horse should go to the stairs wall where the height would be perfect for it.

Eventually the perfect item will present itself for the dining area, I still like the long arrow head display on the eBay link. I also like the spear idea.

It looks really nice there but if it doesn't FEEL right to you, it's going to always bug you.

To me, it looks very nice there. Granted, it's large, but the print on it is small enough that I don't think it looks too busy. It's just much more than the blank wall you were used to. Most of the art in your home is very large, so in that respect also, I think it works well. But, it may look wonderful on your stair wall, as well. And, as you mentioned, worrying about your kitty clawing it or someone sitting at the table there, pushing back and hitting it might be a worry.

It's a lovely piece and I'm glad you got it. Whether or not it's hung at the right height or there's already too much going on in that room, the problem for me is, there's a freaking dining table in the way!! There's no way to see it in toto, to take it in, without moving the chairs and table out of the way. Ain't no way to treat a nice piece like this.

It is hung, and I assume with holes in the wall, to me, that means it is very permanent.

Hm, it's a lovely piece that I think deserves a more special place.

Also, before I noticed that the glass blocks kind of echoed the glass uppers in your hutch. The art seems to distract from that a bit.

Thank you all for weighing in! The stairway was a no go. You only really saw it from an angle there and it felt all wrong. I believe it's found its final resting place in the library. Appropriate, since a buffalo robe tells a story and so do our books! Here's my view of it from the chair where I sit to read.

It displaced the Robert Rivera gourd photo which I hung next to the window. Don't know that it will stay there, but if not I'll be able to find another spot.

Ha - just realized you can see Pooh kitty's "kills" out on the landing in the background. He hunts DH's rolled up dress socks, and carries them to us in his mouth yowling all the way, before dropping them at our feet, totally proud of himself. Pooh the mighty sock hunter.
