Back in April I posted a proposed layout for my kitchen. It was not a good layout, and Gardenweb helped me transform it into a great layout, especially Buehl. She pretty much designed my kitchen back in this thread.... http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/3013287/critique-my-kitchen-plan-please
6 months later we are getting close to a working kitchen. I still need my appliances installed, floors finished with another coat of waterlox, 2 more lights hung, a lot of trim work done, 3 cabinet doors hung, pantry shelves, and some other things, but I'm excited to share what we have so far. Thank you so much Gardenweb for your help along the way. Here it is....

Comments (29)Thanks everybody! We are loving the space now. The old kitchen was the original 1956 kitchen, with the original 48" Thermador electric range with griddle in the middle. Unfortunately only two of the burners worked by the time we bought the house last fall, and neither of them really boiled water. So we've been cooking on a single induction burner since September and through the remodel (which at least made things consistent and more familiar when we were out of the kitchen). The old kitchen was kind of bad*ss, I will admit, but the long serving island was just in the way, the wall oven was 24" and too small for us, and it didn't have a dishwasher. It had been a nicely designed kitchen for its time, but we needed a different layout. Forgot to mention that there was another exterior door in the back corner (where we bumped out the cabinets) that we eliminated! I love having our microwave and toaster and Cuisinart back in that space (30" deep corner), although they're not pictured in the photos I posted. Feisty - apparently the baking soda reacts chemically with the Monocoat/Rubio. Not right away though. I dumped a rather large amount of baking soda on the area by accident, and scrubbed it up, which definitely removed the crayon, but an hour later the area was black. I may post a separate thread for posterity, but sanding it, cleaning away the dust, and reapplying the Monocoat works great. Deedles - the ceiling is way more vibrant now than it was before, when the soffits and the dark cabinets ate up all the light. There was also an amazing amount of yellow grime on the walls, so just painting the ceiling and the walls white (painter matched color to the Adel white...I will try and figure out the exact color) really helped a ton to brighten the space. Karen.Ohio - I will post more closeups when we get back home this weekend. The hardware on the door is really neat! Mousun - to hang the uppers out from the wall, the carpenter built out a frame of 2x4s from the wall, partially supported by a 3/4" plywood sheet (plus the Ikea fridge panel) that went between the fridge and the wall cabinets. Comments (12)Thanks everyone!! dianalo, thanks for the suggestion re:Remodela's backsplash (very nice!). Not sure I understand about going higher than 5.5" for a ss backsplash. If we went with a soapstone backsplash, we were thinking of 5.5" up to the window trim and then stepping it down to 4" for the rest of the perimeter. lavendar lass, we're definitely going for a more traditional look, although the ceiling is a bit more contemporary more by default. We've even considered attaching some beams in the vaulted ceiling to give it more of traditional look. The ceiling will likley remain white but, we'll be painting the walls (either a green or light gray). We are looking to use some simple window treatments (shades?) . We also have a couple of pendants from Barnlightelectric for over the peninsula. Hope this helps give you a feel. Thanks mpagmom. It's good to hear that all-tile backsplashes aren't a problem for cleaning. Is that true for behind the sink and range also? Thanks palimpsest, we're definitely going for more traditional as mentioned above. If you only have the soapstone under the window and glass over the range, are there generally problems with with just drywall everywhere else? Someone mentioned that variations in the wall may leave some separations between the soapstone counter and the drywall. Is that a real concern? One complication is that we really need to finalize the soapstone layout and let them know if we want any soapstone for the backsplash. It might be easier if we could decide after the rest of the kitchen was together. Keep your thoughts and suggestions coming as we're still searching....See Morepartial counter install day!!
Comments (25)I've had them a week and still love love them. They have had lots of use this week and no etching or any stains! Yay. My sink drawers are not really `my` invention. The designer I was working with had them in the plan and I was not familiar with that as an option until I searched them out. Others here on GW have them too. I like them, I like the continuity of the counter run plus I have regular doors on the island sink for anything that is a bit taller than the drawers. The backsplash - I plan on using the same stone on the long run of counters under the windows as they are only about 7" high. It is also going on the window ledges and the wall behind the cooktop. To tell the truth putting it behind the cooktop is giving me pause but I don`t want to overthink it. They are coming today to measure for the backsplash so I hope that means they will get it installed soon. In the area where the seam is, I am going to put a tile that matches the off white in the stone - thinking the Heath ovals maybe.....See MoreSoapstone backplash - what do I need to know?
Comments (15)honu, I was out all day, and just now responding to your questions... first of all love seeing all the other soapstone counters! I am truly a "soapy" and really enjoy my countertops. You are right, we have a corner sink, so the depth for the faucet was not an issue. Our soapstone is called "Mariana" it is Brazilian we purchased from Walker-Zanger in So Cal. I would say it is medium on the hardness scale. The picture was just after install about nine months ago, and oiled. Since then, I oiled a couple more times, but have lately decided to let it just go natural, which I'm liking very much! I think your idea of full height behind the range is a great one, sounds gorgeous! (and very practical too) ...and no, I never got around to posting a reveal, partially because my re-do was more of a freshen up, and also I don't know how to add more than one photo in a post ;) This post was edited by ctycdm on Fri, Nov 8, 13 at 22:22...See More
