I forgot about my seed, now what?

In June I got some fresh seed, and put them in a ziplock baggie with damp paper towel. Left the bag out on the counter a couple weeks, then popped them into the fridge... where I promptly forgot about them till now. I had written down on the label to plant them in August.

So now what can I do with the seeds? Should I leave them in the fridge till it's closer to spring, or plant them in dirt now- and put them inside our outside or what? Should I try wintersowing them?

I'm curious....Why not plant half in a bed outside, and the other half inside, and let us know the results? If the results aren't good, I'll bet there will be seeds available from this winters crop of blooms, so you can try again next year......inquiring minds would love to know...☺

I don't currently have any plants, just seeds. And unfortunately, don't really have a bed prepped for fall sowing yet. So still not sure what to do really.

Yes, I used a pretty good bit of hay. Your response makes me feel a lot better, and this afternoon I actually noticed that more grass was coming up. I think patience and water, water, water are the best course of action. Should the hay be completely covering so you can't see the ground? Also, the soil is pretty much clay with a little top soil mixed in, another reason I was concerned the seed was burried. Lastly, should I worry about overwatering? I'm giving it a thorough soaking a couple times a day. Thanks so much !!

Kriste, Last year I planted up 4 inch pots put them in trays and slid them into one of the those clear under the bed bags(Bought at Dollarama) with holes poked into the top. I had read where someone else had done it successfully. Well, I was skeptical it would work but it did.I had lot of plants growing. I lost a bunch when it forgot to uncover them on a warm sunny day and some of my babies fried:( I will be more diligent this year!!! You could do something similar with your lined containers. Wendy

I planted some 3-4 year old seed packets in a large flower pot that I wasn't using. They nearly all came up and were growing well. Then I needed that pot so I took them out by the handful along with the dirt and more or less dumped them in another pot. Now I have a mixture of Mexican Blanket Flowers, allysum and Pinks? plus another white one I don't know what it is. On the other hand I bought a pack of Sweet Pea seed this Spring and none of them came up. Go figure. Sure, keep those seeds til Spring. Sue

PS, The low's here will be in the low 50's and high's in the low 80's for the next several day's. Do Y'all think putting them outside in a shady spot would be better for recovery? More natural light? Or do you think they would be too delicate? I have them in a wick type tray so they should be OK water wise.

Did you happen to look inside the bag? After a few weeks warm and a few weeks cool they might already be sprouting. If it were me I'd plant them outside now sprouting or not. Things have a way of "escaping my attention" and end up dying inside otherwise :)
