Poor Sickly Amur Maple Tree
Comments (6)Denidill: I've done some reading, and although my problem could be transplant shock or lack of fertilizer as suggested by others here, I'm pretty sure now it's lack of iron. I'm going to give it iron chelate 1-2 inches below the soil and water it well, as soon as the ground can be worked. That apparently works better longer term than spraying the leaves. If that doesn't help, I have until August to return it for a refund. From what I've read, your tree would be happier with iron chelate in the soil if that's it's problem. It's supposed to help for 1-2 years. Good luck to both of us =:)...See MoreDo sugar maple trees grow out of leaf scorch?
Comments (8)Although Sugar maples are native in TN, if you bought a generic, non named tree, you have no way of knowing if its seed came from TN, or somewhere like Ohio or Vermonet....seed provenance matters. It might do better over time simply by having a more extensive root system, but in your zone you are better off with either verifiable TN seed source, or a named variety like Legacy or the Caddo types that tolerate hot summers better....See MoreIs my Sugar Maple tree OK?
Comments (6)Ken, it's hard to get a picture of the whole tree. There might be a squirrel nest, but there are quite a few branches like the one above. In the spring I do see squirrels around. They seem to bite the bark (sap time) and nip off new shoots. But I have two sugar maples, both large. Only one of the trees shows this kind of leafless branching. Ken, my DH would allow me to cut down one sugar maple, but the city won't! I plan to have my two trees pruned in a month or so. That will cost me $2,000! I had a limb fall off this tree a month ago. Rot. Here are some pictures: krnuttle, darn those squirrels! Smivies, I'm not sure how old the tree is. It could be 100 years old for all I know. Homes here were built 60 years ago. Many mature trees were in the area and the builders did not remove many of them. This is not the actual sugar maple that I have asked the city to allow me to remove. I have two sugar maples roughly the same age and both in my backyard!...See MoreGreen Mountain Sugar Maple establishment time
Comments (3)My experience with getting new park trees established....~5 gallons once/wk during the first summer in the absence of substantial rain. 2nd summer, watering only if it doesn't rain for 2-3 weeks though they seem to be fine on all but the driest sites by the 2nd year. The 1st summer of watering avoids the typical pause of root growth in the heat of summer and the 5 gallons/wk favors deeper root growth. Just don't plant them in wet spots, overly dry sandy/gravelly spots, or where soil compaction is really bad...otherwise no special siting is really required....See Morebengz6westmd
