Potting Soil Stays Dry When Watered?
Comments (2)I know I'm responding a week after the fact, but I think you answered your own question....after 2 years, it might be time to repot with new soil. Plus, if there's a significant root ball, the water will just pass through. You can also try filling a water dish under the pot, and let the water draw upwards to the roots. Good luck....See Moreproblem with phals after repotting to bark mix
Comments (15)The bark in the bark mix was never described in detail in the OP. It could be Fir Bark from the USA, Untreated Radiata Pine Bark, treated Radiata Pine Bark or some other type of Bark. Even the size of the bark chunks makes a difference. A mixture that remained wet for a week in tropical lowland conditions doesn't sound good to me. If I post a question here it is more in the hope of getting a few culture clues rather than getting a complete answer. Going north to Tropical Queensland, some of the guys up there pot their orchids in straight blue metal chunks (basalt). The orchids that I buy from up there as raffle plants for a local Orchid society are potted in 50% Polystrene 50% treated Radiata Pine Bark. This was the scene of a black rot disaster a year or so ago when it rained heaps. That is what it does here. No rain or heaps. The Cattleyas potted in Coco-Nut Chunks got black rot while the Cattleyas potted in the same mixture in my glass-houses escaped unscathed. The general rule is the closer the equator, the more arid the mix. Getting back to Phalaenopsis, they are regarded by most orchid growers here as extremely difficult. I have a small collection that I grow indoors all year. I wonder what the optimum watering period is. I water mine about once every three days....See MoreAfraid to repot! Why do my repotted orchids always suffer after???
Comments (13)Arthrum: good point, the temps in my house are only kept above 65 degrees, but it still seems that some temperature hardy plants still show dislike of my repotting... Dbarron: oh my! Sounds like a tragedy! I get upset enough when I break of a new shoot! Vtandrea: thanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely try it on one of my oncidiums! Jane: I live in the Oakland hills in the SF Bay Area. I grow almost all my indoor orchids in the same spot, positioned around a fireplace to control the amount of light. The facing of the house isn't the best. 80% of the light is late morning to afternoon sun . 90% of the windows are west facing :( like the house... The problem might be I repotted at the wrong time. I didn't a lot of reporting in the winter/ late fall (whoops...)...See MoreWatering after repotting Prayer Plant and Calathea
Comments (12)dishtrish: Yes, that is normal, apparently that's why they are called prayer plants. Calatheas and marantas move alot. They lift their leaves at night and spread them in the morning. You can google e.g. "calathea timelapse". I noticed that they move even more soon after generous watering. I love to observe them, they are such fun plants:) I use 1:1:1 mix that petrushka mentioned (peaty mix:perlite:small bark or coir chips). sd2102: Pretty flowers. I used to have the same kind of maranta and it used to flower even a few times a season....See Morearthurm2015
