Ideas to use my vertical garden setup with different crops

User

Hi all,

This year I used Eliot Coleman's instruction on how to grow tomatoes vertically. It worked out well. I planted vertical 2x4s in the ground, then a horizontal one on top. I made it solid and then attached rope from the top 2x4, that were used to train the tomatoes.

The whole setup is about 8" high.
I have two sets like this, about 4" apart.

What could I grow on that for next year? I like squashes, but they mainly seem to be "half climbing" varieties. I doubt they would climb up to 8" and if they do, I would need to "help" them on a daily basis I suppose.

Climbing beans? Could some really climb that much?

I was thinking that maybe a slope would help. The tomatoes were trained 100% vertical, but for squashed or beans maybe I could arrange the ropes so it would end up like a 45 degree netting?

Not sure what I'm saying ;) I'm sure someone has good ideas for it!
My setup is exactly like this, but I have two rows of it.
