I love aloes! My Aloe is one of my favourite plants too. You've come to the right place - this forum is one best resources to learn more. Aloe repotting steps: 1. Get 2 or 3 new pots for the pups. Smaller matching unglazed terra pots would be perfect. Drain holes are a must. My pups are in small 3.5" pots. You have many dried/lost leaves, which makes the pups "taller". Make sure your pots are tall enough! But not too tall or else the soil will take too long to dry out. Alternatively, you can get a wider half-height pot, which lets the pups fit in on a diagonal. 2. Assemble your soil mix. If you are eager to get involved and maximize your Aloe's health, I recommend something that drains extremely well like gritty mix (granite grit, fir bark, and turface). You'll have to put it together yourself, but if you search "gritty mix" you will find great instructions. That is what I used in the two front pots below: Alternatively, you can try 70% large perlite and 30% cactus and succulent soil. Or large perlite and grit, which is what i used in the black plastic pot in the middle of the photo above. There are many good variations, but whatever you choose must drain well and be airy for healthy roots. "Soil" doesn't have to look like "traditional soil" to be good for succulents. Sand and garden potting soil are no good if they form the majority of your mix. Don't reuse your old soil either, always use fresh/new. 3. Remove your plants. The easiest way is to carefully turn your pot upside down and tap it gently with one hand. Use the other to catch the mother plant and pups. Depending how healthy your plant is will determine how healthy the roots are. I just saved this Aloe over the weekend. It hadn't been watered in weeks and all the leaves were limp. The soil was hard as rock and the roots were nearly non-existent (due to the poor soil, not under watering): 4. Clean up your Aloes before replanting. I would use snips/small scissors to cut off any dead leaves. You can carefully cut some of the dead leaves a bit closer to the stem as well. If there are any squishy/rotted stems, leaves, or roots, you should remove them now. Hopefully they can fit into their new pots! 5. If they don't fit, you will have to cut them (or get new pots!). If you need to do this, use pruners or a sharp knife. Make sure to remove the bottom sets of leaves by cutting or carefully peeling them off. If you bury green Aloe leaves in soil, they will just rot and cause problems. 6. Fill your pots with soil and your plants. I like to put a bit of insect screen over the drain hole so my soil mix doesn't fall out. Then I pour in a bit of soil in the bottom and up where the bottom of the roots will be. I hold the plant with one hand and use a miniature trowel to fill in around the roots. Lightly tapping helps settle the mix between the roots - you don't need to compact anything. It's good to place your plants high up in the mix, as you have done in your photo already. It's also okay to have multiple plants in a single pot. Here is what my Aunt's repotted aloe looks like, along with a few other new plants from the weekend. Yes, it looks quite sad! But many of the leaves have perked up today (photo from the weekend): Side note: I would say the pot is taller than I would like. But it's not my plant or pot! I customized the mix so it shouldn't hold too much excess water. 7. Water thoroughly once, if your mix drains well, and then wait. Wait until you see some new growth. It will take a bit of time for your Aloe to re-establish its roots, often weeks. If they ended up with no roots or you had to cut them, expect a month before they will really begin to do well. If your mix is not a very well draining one, I would wait a couple days, then carefully water once. Then wait until the plant starts to grow before watering again. 8. Your Aloes continue to flourish and grow many more pups! Well, that's the plan at least, right? Hope that helps.

Cristina Is the soil you used (cacti&succulent soil) made by you or bought? If purchased, are those ingredients listed on the bag? I am sorry to say but mix of loam, sand and peat is not suitable for succulents. They need potting mix, quite grainy, that allows for good drainage and air exchange. It would not be one made of fine particulates you are mentioning. I am not quite sure about correct names of your succulents, but they all need just about the same: well draining mix, container with drainage hole, good air circulation, good light. Leaning could be caused by wet conditions that weaken the stems, or by lack of light. The 3rd plant may be Crassula ovata, the jade plant. I am surprised that it lived in darker conditions and overwatered for years. I think you are doing right thing by letting it spend time outdoors as much as possible, but the mix should be replaced. Especially if the roots were in poor condition - they could deteriorate further by being in water retaining mix. The pot looks little large for the plant. Bigger pot contains much more soil and if it has poor drainage, overwatering could happen very easily. It could be very nice plant; the coloration is happening from the sunlight and there is nothing wrong with that.

That old age thing worries me! My parent plant might be as old as 30 years. It was a decent size when I bought it. The good news is that I have finally found a site in my garden for the twins. I’d forgotten that we took out a Japanese maple earlier this year because it had outgrown its spot in my small garden as well as outwitted my best attempts to prune it aesthetically. It’s a perfect site with regular water and some afternoon shade. If the twins survive separation and moving they are young and I shouldn’t have to worry about losing them to old age. But I hope I don’t lose the parent either!
