Some of my garlic cloves are yellow in the skin, why?

I have 4th generation Duganski and Susanville garlic, meaning that I have replanted my largest cloves over the past 4 years (with great results) and this year, some of my cloves are bright yellow and have a funky odor. What is causing this? Obviously I wont be using the yellow ones for replanting this year but I want to get rid of whatever this is. Thanks for any ideas.
