Dirty waffle iron, toss or save?

Weird issue.

I have a cheapo waffle iron with non removable grids. We use it for waffles and recently found it is fun to cook tator tots in it. Cleaning is the issue. Two days ago DD held it over the sink and scrubbed the grid clean. It sat open on the counter. I picked up to put it away and when I turned it over some putrid liquid came out of some crevice that I can't determine. I cleaned it up again and let it sit over night upside down. It still really smells bad. DH suggested turning the iron on and letting it cook empty to dry up and kills anything in it which I am doing right now.

Should I just throw it out? If the smell goes away would you still use it?

If so, what do I buy to replace it? I would really like a bigger belgian style one but don't want to spend a small fortune.

btw, I miss this forum! Before the merger I was here everyday. My cooking has suffered.
