Samsung Slide-in Induction Range

Does anyone have hands on experience with the Samsung Slide-In Induction Range Model #NE58H997OWS. Please opine.

I can't speak for long-term use, but we've tested this range in a lab and found it to be one of the best induction models available when it comes to initial quality:

The Samsung freestanding front control (with slide-in look) models, I think, are the best of the new crop of freestanding slide-ins (compared to LG, Frigidaire/Elux/Kenmore and Bosch).

Yes, it has some gimmicks—but I think Guiding Light (similar to Elux's Wave Touch) helps keep an uncluttered look, and FlexDuo is pretty helpful. You might love or hate the Virtual Flame, but it at least gets people less afraid of induction.

Our testers spent a decent amount of time with this model, so ask me if you have any other questions.

Maybe you can get answers to some questions that have been asked here in previous threads on this range?

Are there just ten burner heat settings (as marked on the knobs) or can you make interim power adjustments by adjusting the knobs between the marked steps? Reportedly, the Miele induction range offers this although the user's guide does not mention it. The Samsung's user guide does not mention interim steps either, but it might not have them. It could be a selling point if the function was available because the Samung is sold for less than half the price of the Miele. OTOH, Whirlpool products and numbers of premium priced induction ranges (such as Dacor and F&P) only offer ten settings.

If there are only 10 settings, how are they arranged? That is, are they spaced evenly through the power band or are more of the steps concentrated at the lower end of the power scale where finer control is more desireable? By way of explanation, I'm thinking about tasks like using pressure cookers or making rice. My past experience with some ten-step induction cookers with relatively strictly linear set of power steps, is needing settings between 1 and 2 or between 2 and 3. I hardly ever need to use anything over 6 except for the very top end which is used when bringing a large pot to boil. Induction cookers from the likes of GE, Electrolux, Bosch, etc., with 17 (or greater) steps mitigate the linearity by providng provide interim settings (e.g., 1.5). A hypothetical alternative way of doing this could be having more finely graded steps at the lower end (as by having the first six steps on the Samsung correspond to what would be 1 through 3 or 4 on a GE or Elux).

Induction ranges produce low heat by cycling the burners on and off --- sometimes referred to as pulse width modulations (PWM). In the past, several threads here have reported that some manufacturers (such as GE, Electrolux, Miele, Bosch, etc.) pulse the burners on and off many times per second. The pulsing is imperceptible to the cook. Other brands --- Whirlpool's brands come to mind (including Kitchenaid and Maytag) --- seem to use cruder PWM. The low settings on those ranges pulse and cycle with a few seconds of absolutely still, then ramp up to a full boil for a second or two, and then back to a few seconds of stillness. (This also is common complaint about many less expensive portable countertop induction cookers, as well). What did your reviewers observe about this in using this Samsung?

Concern has been expressed about the location of the the oven vent. (It is in front, right below the left side of the control panel.) How much heat comes out the front oven vent when baking/roasting for an hour or more? Also, does that vent heat the burner knobs or oven control panel?

How loud/intrusive are the cooling fans for the electronics?

After having such a horrible experience with the Kenmore electric range, I am afraid to try Kenmore again. Still have some extended warrranty left which will transfer to the Samsung. I have had great luck with my other Samsung appliances, so I hope I do with the range also. My husband laughed at me when I told him that the appearance of the Kenmore just left me cold, but when he saw it, he felt the same way. Blah. Can't put my finger on why. gscience chick, after baking I usually leave my oven door cracked open in the winter anyway for the heat boost to the kitchen. My son uses Circulon Infinite pans on his induction and really likes them. (Interesting to get cooking advice from my son!) In browsing the net, Circulon has a 25% off sale this month as well as deep discounts on the Infinite (looks like Symmetry will be replacing it). I found an 11 inch skillet for roughly $18 and a twin pack 10 and 12 skillet for $36 (Symmetry), etc. Then on the potsandpans.com website I was able to find the 3qt saucepan for a really good price. I have a few pots and pans that I can use from before (I hope). Two of them have 8 3/4" bases - hope I can use them . . . I love my Calphalon Contemporary saucepans and hate to lose them, but I see that they are coming out with a Contemporary IH line (induction friendly) - in Australia, but not here yet. Maybe soon . . .? Guess my life is kind of dull when I can get so excited about a new range! Any hints and suggestions will be appreciated!

Freestanding versions are definitely a good deal less expensive. Less expensive on the order of $500 to $1000 less. To Dan1888's list of why to consider induction, I also would add that induction smoothtops generate a whole lot less waste heat than other kinds of cooktops and ranges, and that makes them more friendly for use with recirculating hoods. If I had to live with only a recirculating hood, I'd be looking very seriously at an induction range. That said, there can be a variety of reasons why somebody might not want to consider induction. Some folks with pacemakers can be put off by the internet chatter about magnetic fields (much of the chatter being ignorant blather and paranoia, but it can be hard for a newbie to sort through all the internet chaff.) Some folks may not want induction because they simply do not understand it. (Or, sometimes, what they understand is simply wrong.) Others may understand induction but won't consider it for other reasons, including price. Still other folks might like induction in principle but do not like the induction choices within the budget. Maybe they abhor using touchpad controls, or they don't care for the burner arrangements, or they don't like some other aspect of the ranges on offer. We don't know where rop2 fits in that spectrum except that he and his wife are focused on getting a slide-in and they want a double-oven range. The new KA induction slide-in KSIDB900ESS (and the currently available Jenn Air-branded version, JIS1450DS) do sort-of, kinda have two ovens. However, the so-called "baking drawer" is shallow and inconveniently located; these things have been described (justifiably IMO) as warming drawers with delusions of granduer. For a second oven, I'd personally be more inclined to look at something like a countertop appliance like the Breville Smart oven for better capabilities. More generally, my personal preferences in stoves would make me cautious about getting the KA induction slide-in. One is the list price of $3100. Goedeker will be offering an introductory price of around $2250 (shipped, I believe) but other internet vendors (AJ Madison, for example) will be offering it at up around $2700. Local stores will likely have to sell it for rather more, which puts it above Rop2's budget. Second, the KA and Jenn Air both seem to use Whirlpool's the "Aqualift" as the only means of oven self cleaning. The upside is that Aqualift does not get hot enough to cook the electronic controls as can sometimes happen with standard high-heat oven self-cleaning functions. The downside is that AquaLift seems to do an abysmal job judging from the negative reports here. (Do a search on "aqualift" and you'll find a litany of sometimes bitter commentary.) Third, judging from the manuals for the JA and KA, they only have ten heat settings for the burners. Numbers of us would find that too crude for our cooking for reasons that have been discussed at length before. Fourth, the membership surveys from Consumer Reports indicate that Kitchenaid and Jenn Air electric ranges have been among the most-trouble prone brands. Note that the similarly priced Samsung slide-in induction range ("Chef Collection") also has only ten heat settings although it does have the large "flex duo" oven that can be divided into two separately controlled compartments. I've seen several radiant-smoothtop versions available for much less. Like $1800 to $2000 depending on the model and where you shop. Model numbers are something like "NE58Fxx" if you want to search on them. For actual, two-separate-oven-compartment radiant electric slide-in ranges , the ones I recall seeing recently are at or above rop2's max budget. I think I've recently seen a GE Profile (PS920 or maybe PS950) on sale at Lowe's or Home Depot for something around $2500 to $2600. There are also the GE Cafe ranges which are like slide-ins without the countertop-overhangs. They have or had something of a following here, but the single oven versions run around $2800-$2900 and the double-oven versions run upwards of $3100.

I have it. And Iove it. It's the Chef Duo oven one with a warming drawer. I like the LED lights, it gives a visual as to which burner is on. We used to have gas, so that's easier than looking at the screen for us. I dont have anything else to add. I've had it about 5 months.

Unfortunately, I only learn about new stove releases when I happen to stumble across the news. I do know what you mean about being "somewhat underwhelmed by current offerings." Regarding your interest in a bridging element, we are going a bit off topic here, but if you are looking for an induction capable burner spanning griddle, you might want to check out the Zwilling website's clearance of their DeMeyere branded Plancha/Griddle/Teppanyaki. Here is the link. For me, this multi-layered, induction capable Demeyere griddle pretty much solves the problem with most griddles I've used --- that of being much hotter over burners than over the area between them. I've had no trouble cooking pancakes on the middle space and having them done as soon as the outer ones. I like the plancha better than standalone electric griddles like the Broil King because the DeMeyere heats just as evenly, sotres more conveniently, and also doubles as a really great roasting pan. Hi Jwvideo:

The power settings range from 1-9, with a "P" for boosting the right rear and left front burners. If I recall correctly, it's only a single-digit display for each burner. It's been a while since we tested this unit, so I'll look into getting more information.

On low-power settings, we didn't notice any uneven cycling—and we have noticed that issue on some models that we've tested.

As for the controls, we don't measure temperature at the vent (in theory, that should be part of the product certification process), but our testers will comment if the area around the vent is unusually hot. Personally, I've noticed user reviews for other front-control brands that mention poor ventilation causing electronic control failure, but none for Samsung's front-control ranges so far.
