Can I remove the metal RIM from a GE Monogram Induction cooktop

We have a 2009 model 36" wide GE Monogram Induction Cooktop. Metallic finish. It came with a stainless steel rim around it. After 5 years of use, this rim has trapped lots of gunk and while cleaning, my wife took the rim off. Now, I like the look of the cooktop even better. The glass is polished on the edges and was probably designed to be used without a rim. However, there is some sheet metal visible in the front. Can I just cut this off and use it without the rim? Anyone has advice?
