2nd year sapling pot size for japanese maple.

Hi,

I bought a few varieties of Japanese Maple seeds last year and some sprouted in the spring. I have about 12 saplings in plastic 'tree pots' that are 4" wide and 9" tall. The trees are about 2 feet tall on average. They did well this year as far as I know (I don't know much). But I think they would not be terribly satisfied if they stayed in that size pot another full year.

I'm wondering if I should get new pots for next year for these guys. My choice is upgrade to black plastic 6" by 16". Or 'root pouch' sized by the gallon starting at 3 gallon, which is about 12" deep. Or I'm open to suggestion. What would say is best with a balance on budget?
