Dry pots in container soil
Comments (5)It's prolly not the media, but the watering practices that are most likely to be suspect. Both peat and bark-based soils, either singularly or in combination, become hydrophobic (water-repellent) as they dry below 30% moisture content. You should be watering more frequently, or also helpful, would be to water lightly & then return about 10 minutes later & water again. The clay pot isn't making it worse, per se; but it does cause the soil to dry down more quickly than if you were not using a gas-permeable container like plastic or ceramic. Re pot size: If anything, you're under-potted, but it may just be that your watering practices need to be tweaked or the soil blend adjusted to allow for longer intervals between watering. Incidentally, I regard a soil that requires watering once daily to be very desirable and if it holds good amounts of air - close to ideal. Comments (8)What cheeze said may sound harsh but it's definately the truth. My potted bhut is in standard Miracle Gro potting soil with a bit of bonemeal and fish emulsion. That's it. Fact is, too much attention can be worse than neglecting the plant. Especially when you start throwing in chemicals without being positive of what the problem actually is. I've had quite a few pepper plants show purple stems, especially where they branch off near the top of the plant. I believe that's just from the sun. As far as the leaves go. They could be overwatered. Personally, I water when the plant starts showing stress....See MorePot soil not drying out.
Comments (2)With willows, it is not a problem. With other plant types, it certainly could be. Whatever you might be growing, they will all need plenty of light at this time of year. Is your basement dark?...See Moredry soil pockets in citrus tree potting mix
Comments (3)When you say "dry pockets" are you meaning areas where the soil doesn't get wet, or where there is no soil? If, the former: I'd be worried about the soil itself if it didn't get totally wet under the conditions you describe. Another question would be: why did you have to tip the pot to drain? Aren't there drainage holes in the bottom of the pot?...See More- 8 years ago
