David Austin Backlash... Well post your FAV Austin Pic here.
Comments (146)Tess is such a good rose. It was on the bush 6 days and just kept getting poofier and poofier but held together. Its been a dry heat and in the 90's this past week plus uber smoky from the wildfires and literally 'raining' ash some days. Gotta love Tess! Some others doing well in the wicked heat TIMF Litchfield Angel Jude the Obscure...I swear I couldnt get enough pics of him the other day!! He is sooo ~Dreamy~ I'm obsessed with the way the buds look half open. I could get lost in those buds for hours!...See MoreGraham Thomas or Golden Celebration, for Palm Springs.
Comments (12)Considering "But it's a dry heat" a Palm Springs David Austin rose might look great in December, January and part of February. But with temperature averages listed at March 80 April 88 May 95 June 104 July 108 August 107 September 103 October 93 November 78 Most of the year those roses are going to shut down and just try to stay alive. From personal experience, my Golden Celebration (from what I hear a better bloomer than Graham Thomas) blooms once in spring and again in the fall. It has never gotten taller than 2 feet tall BECAUSE it is in a HOT area for here, still less than the average temps in Palm Springs. You might want to ask on the Antiques forum for a scented rose that can handle the heat. But the English climate roses will probably not be as happy as you would like in the desert...See MorePlease give your opinion of and experiences with these Austin roses.
Comments (12)I have John Clare and Charlotte, both grafted. Charlotte is well established, JC is one yr old. My Charlottes are reliably hardy. They are close to 4' tall, tidy growth with good foliage. I lose only a few inches of cane per winter. They have no protection, live near the edge of the road so are subjected to snow plow abuse and road salt. So for a rose that can stand up to that, they deserve a place, otoh, they are kind of boring - average and well behaved, no drama. First flush is perfectly adequate, color is a nice light yellow that doesn't turn pink and fades only slightly. the blooms have nice form and keep their shape for a reasonable time. Rain and sun tolerance is good. Repeat is about average, scattered flushes. I got John Clare because it's often praised as Austin's best bloomer. I can't argue with that. Constant color, but not my favorite color, and a bit of a plain looking bloom. I think I'm going to move them and contrast them with white. I was pleasantly surprised by the growth, which was vigorous. Mine hit almost 5', with long upright branches, bushy and even, not the well known unbalanced octopus growth. This winter was mild, and they have very little damage....See MoreIs Golden Celebration a good idea?
Comments (68)I had heard this rose might get tall, but things don't usually get huge in my climate as it's just not that sunny, so I thought I'd try. However, rather than growing up, my two-year-old GC seems to be growing "out", like a wild thing... I have never quite seen a plant grow in every direction like this. When I stake it, branches tend to grow out sideways, then flop over, or flop, twist and grow upside down. Worse than any raspberry bush. Like a Clematis on steroids. It's in the back of a border, I can't seem to keep it from learning on, or hugging branches around its neighbors, and it grows fast. It's like The Stranger Things vines this year. Some shrubs like this start to grow straight-up better with time, is this one of those? Or will it need its own yard? Is there any kind of pruning that reigns this in? And how to do it? Pruning it after the first flush last year seemed to kill part of it off, which was surprising, so i don't want to go too hard on it....See Moreeri54
