Firecracker fern, either Russelia rotundifolia or Russelia equisetiformis, is usually grown in full sun for their bright red tubular flowers, but I'm growing it in a shady spot as a long stemmed draping fern. These plants of the round leafed form (rotundifolia) were passed along by Patty a couple of years ago and this year are fulfilling my vision.

I have two planted in big pots on the corners of the pigeon loft turned 'art gallery'. The fronds go all the way to the ground ...

It's hard to photograph, but they are eerily fascinating from inside the 'art gallery' where the long stems hang down through the wire covering ...

What plants are you growing in a way not usually intended?

Happy gardening!
