Vegetable Garden Flowers

Yes, this is a vegetable garden site. Still, I have raised some flowers along with veggies for umpteen years.

I set out gladious corms. These are beautiful and you dig up the corms in the fall and store in a cool place.

I raise the large crested cockscomb...Burpee Red Velvet. I save seed... don't raise other celosia in the area if you save seed.

I love the Oklahoma series zinnias. They bloom and just get taller and wider till frost... without the old bugbear mildew. They are smaller in bloom than the giants, but more than make up for that in other ways. you can save your own seed, and the butterflies love them.

Nasturtiums of the spreading type only get better till frost.

I have sweet alyssum everywhere and petunias in pots. I have plenty of pots along the fence with daylilies, dusty miller and agapanthus.

On the other side I have an herb garden that also has potted flowers and nasturtium (I NEVER let the N-word get into the garden....OR morning glories! Argggggggg!)Though I found some in the tomato bed!

Nearby the garden is an Iris bed, then next to the deck is a climbing area! M Glories, Nasties and trumpet vine. Nancy

I am an utilitarian, and recognize the benefits of blooms nearby. I have a large flower bed 5 ft from the garden, and numerous wildflowers in and around the orchard. the point is to have continuous blooming through the growing season, so that a stable population of beneficials can be established and maintained.

now that is late season, goldenrod, echinacea, zinnia and mums run the show at both sites. Orchard blooms early, so it needs summer blooms starting with daisies, while the garden blooms in summer, so nearby spring flowers (violet, dandelion, daffodil, iris, day lily, lilac, ornamental pear and apple) help.

You may be flamed because your subject title leads us to think YOU DON'T want chickens. HOW DARE YOU!!! No, seriously, Carla's right. And anywhere you post it is fine, I just think more people frequent the "Discussion" page than the "Conversation" or "Gallery". So, you'd get more responses sooner there. But here is fine too! And welcome to the forum! You're at the right place...a lot of folks have left us because they are sick of our "chicken questions". But hey...what's a farm without chickens??? For that matter, what's a LIFE without chickens!?! Right Carla? And you don't need a farm to have them, either! Now, to address the actual question: Put them where it's quickest and easiest for you to get to them in bad weather, but where they can still have what they need. You will, I can almost promise, end up expanding the area for more anyway, so just make room for the few to start, and keep an open mind for expansion! ;) Suzie

I've had my coop for about 13 years. Every fall, after my garden clean-up, I do the big coop clean-up and all the 'stuff' -poop, bedding, uneaten, buried feed- is layered onto my gardens. By Spring the heat of it is gone and the area is ready to plant, whether you till or layer. On perenniel beds, just be careful to go lightly and keep it away from the crowns of plants. One thing I have learned is that shredded paper from bills and such make the best chicken bedding. The cross cut being better than the long cuts. The paper is more absorbent and breaks down faster than straw or sawdust. Not to mention being a fitting end for junk mail. I tried composting a few times but the fact is, chickens are the best, most efficient composting method I have found. They eat anything. And I do mean anything. It is perfectly OK to give 20 chickens the small amount of cooked meat scraps that an average family produces - including bones, and yes, chicken. Even things like orange peals, peach pits, etc. that they really don't eat, go into the coop because between all the scratching and the poop, things break down amazingly fast. Kay.

Have you thought about a water garden? I love mine. No weeding; no need to worry about over watering and lots of great therapy with happy fish to kiss your fingers. This is the pond before the plants started growing this year: It's very easy to maintain with an attached bench on one side and the deck with chairs on the other. Welcome to Colorado, moon glow! Strawberries will be no problem. Can't really think of any common veggies that are a problem, just depends on the weather and the water situations. For flower ideas, you might take a trip down to the Denver Botanical Gardens. By all means go to www.highcountrygardens.com and sign up for a catalog. That gives you oodles of ideas for xeric plants.

I love planting alyssum, marigolds, and petunias around to add color to an otherwise green veggie garden. Great for attracting beneficials and hummingbirds!

I don't deliberately plant flowers in the vegetable garden but I selectively leave those which self sow there. So there are Opium poppies, nasturtiums, aquilegias and Nigella every year.

Don't forget blooming crops too - my basil, mint, fennel, arugula, chicory & garlic chives are all good attractors - & I grow spilanthes for the flowers.
