Bathtub doors for small tub

We have a small bathroom about 8 feet by 4.5 feet. We have a vanity, toilet and then a tub running along the 4.5 foot length. We were able to buy the 4.5 foot tub from home depot. Now I'm trying to figure out what to do about enclosing the tub, so to speak. I'd really like to avoid a shower rod. It's a small bathroom, and I think that would feel cramped. Also, our house is pretty minimalist style and we've done a huge reno, and so the shower rod would feel messy and like we skimped out on that room.

So what are our options? I thought we'd just do a sliding glass door, but I can't seem to find any that would fit this small space. Most of them start at 58". Our opening is technically 53.5 inches (because of tiling).

I feel like custom glass is going to be way more than I want to spend.

If you can manage the swing space, you might try just a European shower screen from Ark Showers. I had to look high and low to find one available in the U.S. They will ship direct and have outstanding customer service. There is a lesser tier, thinner model available through Amazon & HD but it has a stainless/chrome handle you cannot remove, and I wanted a clean look in our small guest bath. Incidentally, we never open ours except to clean where the glass touches the tub.

What I did was use old shards of stained glass, some are even old 70's lamps dissasembled and cut up, and I tumble the glass in a rock tumbler sometimes, to get the sharp edges off,(but this can be done by scraping the glass edges together to get the edges dull) and I use clear silicone adhesive to glue the peices to the shower door, leaving a space for grout. then I grout it just like you would tiles on a backsplash or tub surround. I have even bought stained glass off ebay! And also have smashed up glass plates, bottles to use in this fashion.

Wow, thanks bumble doodle! Tt is great to know that the tub works well as a shower. We are tall too--at least most of us (two of my teenage daughters are twins and one is 5'2" and the other is 5'10", so maybe the short one complains a bit but that's ok, since she complains about everything!) We are getting the non-jetted version. Also, I am hoping that building the deck at the front will help with the water spray. I am pushing the tub back into an alcove under the window the long way (so we get into the tub at the 32" side rather than from the 48" side) and we are trying to go without shower doors in order to make the bath feel open. With a deck, we buy a few more inches of length to help avoid water on the floor. We may not succeed and will put a panel on if we have to. Any thoughts on this?

Since you have 3 bathrooms that sound quite large, I would leave a tub in one of them and then do exactly what you want in the other 2 bathrooms. Whoever designed your house sure did love the long vanities! I'm stunned by those measurements. It could look a little odd to have counters that long with just one sink, so I would consider adding tall storage cabinets (if you could use more storage) alongside a shorter length countertop/vanity. As for one or two sinks, I'm building our new main bath with just one, because I like to have counter space to spread out on. That's fine for the way we live - my husband and I never need to be in the bathroom getting ready at the same time. Nor did my kids ever have a problem sharing a single sink in our previous house. But some people would refuse to buy a house that had just one sink in the master bath. I don't think there's any one right answer for this.

Hi lazy_gardens. I'm finding that 60 seems to be the maximum width, too. Is it a matter of physics, I wonder? I could use a fixed panel to cover a few more inches, but my clever idea had been that if you had, say, 33" clear opening on one end of the tub or the other when the doors were slid open, you'd have that much easier access to the tub. I guess you could have a 3" return on either end, in either glass or tile, and still use a 60" door without unduly hemming in the tub. Following our previous discussion about how to use a 60" or, preferably, 66" alcove tub on a 96"-long wall, I'd been thinking of a setup like this, with a half-glass half-wall at the foot of the tub: and then I was thinking about whether an enclosure using sliding doors instead of shower curtain would be possible. Of course, this will all be moot if I decide to go with the Americh Bow tub instead of a 3-sided alcove tub. ;-)

And Americans always ask -- does that thing keep water off the floor? Yes, without a doubt. They are about all I have ever seen in in Europe. So easy to clean, too.

MizLizzie, what is the brand of shower appliances you have? I love that set up with the curved rainshower head.

olychick, that is a Kohler hydrorail with a Moen rainhead in brushed bronze. (The Kohler rainhead was hundreds more, so I got a Moen on closeout.) I love, love, love the whole setup. So functional, and designed by Kohler primarily as a retrofit to avoid changing out a wall valve, or a lot of drilling. In the end, we did update our valve, but wanted to keep our simple, clean tile because the bath was very modest inside. I hope to put another in our MBR refurb.
