Comments (2)Yes, it is goldenseal Hydrastis canadensis. While I do have some wild areas including some with mature trees, sadly I am not fortunate enough to have a true woods. That is a long term goal for some of our property but the poor quality of much of the soil (bad farming techniques relying too much on chemicals for too long) has slowed that goal. The land must heal itself before it can support a more healthy ecosystem. After 10 years of letting it let fallow, I am just seeing the first and toughest woody shrubs take hold in some of it. It gives me hope! As such, I have had to content myself for the time being with a woodland garden of native plants in an area that has pretty comparable conditions to a native woodland setting. I've added many wonderful plants like goldenseal to it. This garden is the only way I will see this wonderful plant in the "flesh" either. Overharvesting combined with the fact that little land in my small corner of the world escaped the plow has made this plant a true rarity. I have never seen a wild goldenseal or ginseng plant. Comments (15)I make my own suet cakes. Below is a recipe that one of our bird rehabbers uses so I thought I would share it here. It is almost identical to what I use and compared to commercial suet cakes costs pennies to make. I keep mine in the freezer and take them out as needed. I press the mixture into rubbermade sandwich keepers or if you have the plastic trays that the commercial stuff comes in you can use that as a mold and after you freeze the 'dough' just pop it out of the mold and wrap in plastic wrap or put in sandwhich bagss until needed. --A 2 lb bag of yellow corn meal --About 2 large, heaping serving spoons of peanut butter --About 4 large heaping serving spoons of vegetable shortening --(We add avian vitamins only because we have them, nice but not necessary). Mix thoroughly and adjust ingredients as necessary to make the consistency of a soft sugar cookie dough....See MoreGreat tips: some you may know, some you may not...
Comments (7)Re: cornmeal and ants. Have been having a problem with ants on my sunporch. They seem to be living underneath and coming up through cracks in the tile floor. There's no way for me to get to where they live to spray (and I don't like sprays anyway). So I mixed up some cornmeal and borax in a little deli container lid and left it near where they've been arriving. It's been about a week, and the problem has considerably slowed. BUT they seem to be 'burying their dead' in the cornmeal mixture. I've actually seen a live ant dragging and leaving a dead one there! and there were several little carcasses last I looked. But hey--if it works, without dangerous chemicals, or smells that will give me respiratory problems, I'm thrilled....See Moreloonar29
