Rollcall: What asian vegetables are you growing
Comments (38)You might get a few squash on the smaller size, that aren't fully ripen, but they'll still taste good, just not as intense/rich of a flavor as the summer fully ripe ones. Kabocha usually are the first ripen squash for my parents(in early summer, by late April-May), then the winter squash ripen in late summer and fall. At this time, there's no Kabocha squash still growing for us. But, if sowing late, then, they will be like the other winter squash, ripening later in the summer and fall. If you need, more lemon grass cuttings or rooted cuttings fresh from the bush/mat, I can get you some for shipping cost. Same with Thai, holy, and lemon basil. I can also get you seeds of the kind of squash we grow too. I don't know the variety, but it have ridges and some are light brown/yellow and others are green with white lines and splotches. I'll show pictures when, I go to the farm. Let me know, if you would like some of the stuff, I mention....See Moreplant moringa olifeira from seed/cutting
Comments (60)Prior to this morning, I didn't even know there was any moringa threads on here. I started 8 seeds purchased on Ebay last September here in Riverside county between Temecula and Hemet. They all sprouted in ground. Two on one end of the hedge bed thrived and got about 3' tall prior to cold weather. The others stayed small, but alive. This spring the two on one end took off like rockets and are now 8' tall and full of flowers. I will say they are on drip systems, and get about 1 hours drip every other day. We plan to hedge ours for easy harvest of leaves and pods, so they will grow no higher than 8' tall. We discovered why the others didn't grow. There is a giant boulder about 6" below the dirt, so no place for their roots. They are still alive, but only 12" tall. I read that the Moringa Stenopetala has bigger leaves and tastes better, so we recently planted seeds of that variety in a different spot on our property. This morning one has sprouted. It's very cute and green and has it's own dripper, which we will turn off once it's established. That variety stores water in it's bulbous trunk and is very drought resistant, which is great in drought conditions here in Southern California. I will say it is very hot here in summer, and in the winter it can snow, but it never sticks. The trees do get set back in winter, but they spring up again when the weather warms....See Morenurseries in San Diego with Asian veges and fruit trees
Comments (12)Nurseries in San Diego with Asian veggies and rare fruit trees. In my opinion one of the best is the Bonita Creek Nursery, they have a huge selection! http://www.bonitafruittrees.com David, the owner, is GREAT and the fruit is super. They have Avocado, Cherimoya, Cherry, Sapote, Guava, Figs, Mangos, Berries and many other trees. The nursery is in Bonita, just 15 minutes from down town San Diego by car. Have fun! Comments (16)Joe, Yes, it can be grown in Zone 7 as perenial plant. You need to grow plant in the pot. Keep the plant out door during summer. Before the expected frost warning (mostly during September) take the plant indoor. If the plant has beans on it do not trim, otherwise trim the stem at 1 foot above the soil level in the pot. In my experiment here in Maryland plant started flowering in very first year but matured after third year to produce enough beans as seen in the posting above....See Moredkv21
