Comments (10)Tom Using large pot and soil that does not drain freely together would cause problem with any plant. What kind of soil is it planted in? Planting jade (or any plant) so deep also creates too much shade for the lower parts of trunks/stems. If it was my plant, I would plant it much higher (almost level with the top of container). If you like to keep that container, make sure the soil drains very well. Does it have drainage hole on the bottom? Are you planning to keep it outside during summer? It will like it - if you have any outdoor area available. Don't worry much about 'butchering' it right now, that can be corrected. Most important are the growing conditions, so your plant is healthy. Cuttings are looking good, looks like there is new growth already. How long ago did you chop them off? You did right thing to keep them out of soil to callus (harden). If you plant them in soil, don't water right away as the plant without roots can't absorb water. Rina This post was edited by rina_ on Mon, Jun 17, 13 at 17:34...See MoreHuge jade plant! Comments (11)Hello stephlmccoy1, That's a very nice big Jade that someone left behind, lucky you :-). I would start by trimming off all of the branches that have any down curve to them. Take a step back after that is all done, and see what it looks like. Try to invision what you want it to look like, and go from there. Good luck, and post pictures what you decide to do!...See MorePruning Advice for my Jade plant/s
Comments (6)Soooo… I repotted one of the two Jades. Now, I'm a little worried if I'd done it right and if I got the right mix for it. Hoping to again tap into everyone's wisdom. I'd removed the Jade from the pot there was a lot of roots. Mostly thin ones webbed on the outside against the pot. It took a while to get the old soil off and some of the thinner roots came off in the process. I know as much that losing the thinner roots when repotting is okay but I still had heaps left - definitely more than the 1/2 of what I started with. Oh and I didn't know I needed to rinse the roots either. Then when I opened the bag of Succulent/Cactus mix from the nursery, it wasn't as loose or gritty as the mixes I've seen on the threads here. I didn't think I could leave the Jade out of the pot so I reluctantly repotted it with this mix. And now I don't know if I should go to the shops, grab something to mix in with the new mix it's in and in the process further trim the roots. Is that going to be too stressful for the plant to be repotted twice? It was cold and very windy last night so I've kept him in my kitchen in a well-lit corner for now so he doesn't topple over. If I do prune the roots, is it right that it's around 2/3 of it? I've put photos of the mix it's currently in, the plant in this new mix and also a Coarse Grit product I've seen and considering mixing to provide more aeration....See Moreneed advice on plants, jade plant and dracaena maginata
Comments (1)I do not see black spots on the leaves of the jade, just 1 or 2. Is there many of them? Are they large? How about dry leaves that fell off - was it just few or many? Sounds like normal ageing of leaves. Why do you think plant has root rot? Plant looks just a bit etiolated at places, maybe it was moved from poor light into better at times. Soil doesn't look that great for a succulent: I would add lots of sifted perlite to it to improve drainage. After that, I would keep it in best light possible over the winter, let it grow and do some pruning in spring. Where is it going to be kept? What is your growing zone? Can't help with other plant - do not grow it....See Moresshanky
