Should I get the Shingles Shot?
Comments (45)In July of 2010 husband and I had the shingles vacine. This past September 2013 my husband broke out with the shingles on the right side of his face from about the eye down to the chin. Very uncomfortable he was. They did not get in his eye, but he had a terrible right ear. They cleared up in about 3 weeks, but he still had a lingering pain around the ear and inside the mouth. By Christmas the annoying pain had left. Some shingle cases are plagued with pain afterwards for months or into years. I personally believe having the vaccine cut down on the effects of the shingles and his was a milder case even though he was in plenty of pain for a while. I did worry about the ear it looked so bad down in the ear channel. Swelled bad. Yes I think the vaccine did help and I would recommend the vaccine to anyone. I have seen some full blown cases in the nursing home residents. It is not pleasant and they suffer so.....Shirl...See MoreShingles Vaccine
Comments (16)Grandma_Bonnie, are you sure you had a chicken pox vaccine? The reason I ask is that my kids are 21 and 33 and they didn't have a chicken pox vaccine when they were young. I was so hoping that it would be available before they caught chicken pox, but it wasn't. My daughter (oldest) was about 10 when she had chicken pox, so I'm thinking the vaccine wasn't available until sometime after 1989. As far as getting the shingles vaccine, I did go ahead and do it. A friend, in her upper 40's, had shingles last year and said it was the most painful thing she's ever had. And it just seemed to last forever. I know that the vaccine doesn't prevent it in all cases, but when it doesn't prevent shingles, it's said to lessen the severity so I'm hoping it was a wise move. I had the vaccine at 57 and my doctor said that though they recommend it for anyone over 60, they will generally give it to people over 50 if they request it....See MoreMeasles vaccine update
Comments (30)Peter, even if you were vaccinated, you can lose immunity. I received a full compliment of vaccines as a child (born in 78) but when they ran titers when I was pregnant, it turned out I was no longer immune. They ran titers when pregnant with my 2nd child, and after having 2 shots, I still was not immune. Now after having 3 shots, I am again immune. Vaccines are an important tool but I think it is easy for people to think they last longer than they do. Some require boosters and that is why it is now being recommend that adults be boosted for whooping cough and why we still need to get tetanus boosters (which I am guilty of not getting updated and really should do because tetanus scares me)....See MoreNew shingles vaccine, bad reaction to second dose.
Comments (103)I wanted to give an update on my lingering shingles residual pain in my hip. I have been taking amitripitiline and tramadol 25 mg at night for a different condition. However it has helped reduce the intensity of the pain in my hip from the shingles. It has not completely gone away but it is much less painful and doesn't itch as much either. I am not happy about taking the tramadol nightly but since it is helping multiple problems I guess it is worth it....See Moretrancegemini_wa
