Cute little guy!! Guess GS can dig worms & feed him, he may end up pretty tame!! Year my DH died I heard a cooing 1 morning, i went out & looked in orange tree finally got a ladder & this dove just sat there & I was about a ft. away. I went out every day & talked to her told her she would have better luck next year cause a handful of long pine needles is not a nest, eggs would fall to the ground,she almost acted like she understood & would cock her head & coo. Finally there was a lot of noise out back so I ran to window to see. 2 adult doves showing their 2 little ones the finer points of taking their 1st bath, it was a noisy affair in the perfect birdbath, a plastic Parsons table flipped up side down & legs removed & filled with water & on over 100degree days I added a tray of ice cubes. Birds had a good time. That dove was much smarter than me but I still don't know where those eggs were & why I didn't hear them until they left the nest. I never saw an adult leave the nest either. They are around now but have never nested in my yard again. Guess they knew I needed a distraction from my loss. Jan

Alright now! You guys are confusin me! Ive checked my books and Ive googled a bunch of pictures onlineand I dont know what it was that was here. The pic of the bird I posted is a little misleading. The bird I saw was WAY browner than it looks in the pics. I know, I knowdont go by the color! And its sitting on the branch with its back toward me. I was amazed that I was able to get a pic when it turned its head in my direction briefly a couple times. Heres the third pic I got where you can (kinda) see that its facing away from mebut its the worst quality pic. I figured out why the pictures from upstairs are distorted! Theyre taken thru the screenand the birds on the feeders in the backyard look even worse because of the "down" angle of the camera thru the screen. The BIG bird isnt quite as bad since the neighbors yard is higher than mine, so it was taken on somewhat more of the same level with me. In the second pic above the bird had turned a little bit more sideways, but its still sitting on the branch facing away from me. With all the pictures Ive looked at, I really dont know, now, what it was. I first saw it on top of the lattice at my back fence, which is only about 25' away from the windowI have a very shallow backyardand I sure didnt notice any black eye stripe or black and white head striping. Actually, I didnt notice any black or gray at all. It sat on that branch and I watched it for close to 10 minutes. Tho the pic doesnt show it, it was brown and tan. I guess I havent found any immature pics, cause all the ones Ive found are very much gray to dark gray. I think the tail pointing down so much in the pic was as much a balancing act as anything. The branch it was on was very long and pretty small for such a large bird (at least 15-18"), and it was moving around a lot. So I dont think the position of the tail is telling in this case. And then theres still the problem of what the first bird I saw wasthe purpose of this post. It was really VERY different. When I saw the second one the next day I assumed it was a pair since males and females can be quite different in size and colorand since a lot of birds do travel around in pairs, but the closest picture Ive found yet of the original bird is the first pic I linked of the Gray Hawkwhich we all agree is wasnt! But it was exactly like that picture, but lighteralmost whitewith very obvious, wide, dark banding on the tailwhich was very widely fanned when it flew away. Maybe I just need to concede thatunless one or both come back and I get better picturesIm never going to know for sure what they were. Whatever they were, Im glad I got to see them! Skybird (who is easily identifiable by the arms and legsand the uniform!) P.S. Digit, my pair of robins (that are here all winter) nest in my backyard every year, but that obviously has nothing to do with the feeders. I do think it might have to do with the constant water sourceand the easy access to worms in the worked soil in the veggie garden. And there was a nest in one of the neighbors cottonwoods that overhangs my yard, but I dont know what was in it! I only know it was there because its been falling into my backyard all fall and winter! Other than that I havent seen any other nests, but then I dont actually have any deciduous trees, and Ive never seen any nests in the two upright junipersand I dont have any bird houses out since I dont have anywhere to hang them. Wait! I've had a house sparrow nest in the Euonymous that grows up the side of my house right by the steps down off of the deck every year! Do they count as birds? They've been building it on top of the bend in the downspout where they were completely hidden by the foliage. But they won't be back! I've pulled almost all of the Euonymous down! It was growing up under the siding and the shingles!

It is the pupal stage of a tomato or tobacco hornworm. They look very similar as caterpillers and pupa. Both feed on tomato plants and sometimes on peppers and potatoes and other solanacious plants. Your pupa will emerge as a hawk or sphinx moth. And it may mate and lay lots of eggs that will hatch into tomato and pepper eating machines. You might want to get rid of it now. You passed on a specimen whose carcass you might have been digging out of the ground this week, when the record rains of early summer killed it. As I'm always saying, at least hundreds, probably thousands, of (expensive, usually) monkey puzzles have been planted by gardeners along the east coast since the 60s and before, and yet we hardly know of many mature specimens. I can't remember if you are on LI or in NJ, but either place should have plenty of mature specimens - as they do of other desirable, sufficiently-hardy collectibles of the 20th century like Sequoiadendron. Just in my random existence, not even involving contact with collectors of rare plants, I know of one in the neighborhood in Columbia, MD, where I briefly lived in the mid 2000s that was killed off by a wet spell one summer. I never even spoke to the person who owned it, I just noticed it prominently planted in their yard. It was 8' tall and had probably been there a few years, looked established and healthy one year but was gone the next. I once found a primary source/gardening journal in google books from the 1920s attesting to their difficulty in CONUS non-maritime climates! Specifically on Long Island IIRC. It's pretty clear that in places with cool summers to their liking, winters are too cold, and where winters are sufficiently mild, summers are too hot. The one at Polly Hill Arboretum has supposedly died back a few times, to the trunk. (that's just what their website once said about it: seems a bit implausible to me but the take home message is: was probably planted decades ago, yet is not a mature specimen even in that somewhat benign climate. NB the Fairweather guys claimed to have found a huge Austrocendrus on Cape Cod or the islands, which would have been the only one of the east coast) The known US east coast ones over 25' are: The Barnes Arboretum (who also had the horticultural savvy to bring the northernmost Sequoia on the east coast to maturity: the key for both probably just leaving them alone and not "feeding" them), the one in Bethesda MD that survived <<0F in 1994, and one at an old estate in Wilmington, DE, that was cut down for "not looking English enough." (the best of all possible anecdotes concerning the overall idiocy of most people who practice so-called "landscape architecture" in this country)
