Lots of choices here for you, Carlene. Anna Olivier can definitely handle our downpours and poopoos our humidity. She's wonderful - in full bloom now in the heat, and I don't mean dinky little flowers. She's amazing. I wouldn't mind ten of her. Jeri Jennings doesn't ball either, but she also doesn't have many leaves. :(( The climber Duchesse d'Auerstadt is a nice bright yellow. Mine is only a year in the ground and had her first flush (maybe 10 flowers) a few weeks ago. No problem with rain. I have Blumenschmidt. I think she balled a little in the spring but that might have been from thrips rather than the cool, moist nights. She is interesting in that sometimes she is a deep yellow and other times light yellow with a green eye and some pink around the edges. Sherry

How much of a problem is blackspot in your area? If not too bad (or not the type this rose is susceptible to), then how about the most yellow of just about all old roses, R. foetida 'Persiana'? She gets more yellow in the sun! No fading whatsoever for this rose. But I hear she can fall prey to blackspot. A few roses have gotten blackspot in my garden but so far not Persiana (although I expected it as dire as the warnings were). I just LOVE this rose. Have 2 of 'em. Yellow, yellow, YELLOW but even so it goes well with the cool tones of many old roses. Once bloomer though in case that doesn't appeal to you. A couple other once blooming old roses that are yellow are William's Double Yellow, and the favorite of many travellers across the US, Harison's Yellow. There are pictures of all of them on HMF. I grow all three! Another you might want to consider is Marechal Niel. I've never grown him so can't comment on whether the yellow fades, but this rose is supposed to be a heat-lover and is ultra gorgeous IMHO. But many clones on the market are virused, so I'd ask the seller if contemplating this variety if they have the clean version from Florida Southern. Melissa

Thanks for the feedback. I have had a good look on the web and have ordered some chelated iron (which also contains magnesium) and will give them a foliar spray. It seems that the worse thing to do is to be too kind to them and fertilise them. However they can suffer from iron and it seems magnesium deficiencies. Our soil is sandy and light so it is well drained. Have bought and planted some banksias from an English nursery that specialises in them (The Old Walled Garden in Kent) and they are surviving well, although one of them is looking a little yellow (*gulp*) so I'll go down the iron/magnesium and no added fertiliser route. If this works then I'll have a go at some more seeds. The mix that I started them off in was a mixture of sand, potting compost and perlite, roughly thirds. Thanks for the help and encouragement.

HU-284226487, Lux, it's YOU? How neat! I've missed you! You're welcome, Cynthia! RdV and GH (and her color sports) all do it and there are more, too! Jacques Cartier, Comte de Chambord, Mutabilis (pull off the dead and dried "hips" and smell your hands!), and a number of others will do that. Generally, most of the Portlands, Damasks, Centifolias, some of the Gallicas pretty much should be expected to provide those scents. Occasionally, you encounter an HP which will do it. Of course all of the Eglanterias do it. Many species do, too. Not all, but many. Soliel d'Or and the Foetidas, Lawrence Johnston and some of the other Hybrid Foetidas all smell like Juicy Fruit Gum. Wander around fondling Chinas and notice their peppery scents to those parts. Perhaps GH has her scents from the combination of Chinas and species behind her? Fedtschenkoana has the "Nobel Fir with hardwood smoke" scent to those parts. Its offspring morph that into spruce, pine and other evergreen scents, at least into the second generation. There are SO many neat scents to discover! And, I totally agree with you about every Cl Tea and Tea-Noisette ever bred, Lux!
