You'll have to give us a little more information of what you're talking about. I'm totally confused? Are you talking about an Operating System (Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Linux, iOS, etc...). Are you talking about a Document, Picture, Music, etc...? If it's a Program, what Program (Word, Excel, (2007, 2010, 2013, etc...) MS Paint, OneNote, etc...) is it that you're using?

sorry, guess I figger you are looking over my shoulder when I write, hard to put into words, just simple putting folders into other folders, when sorting and they jump into an ajoining folder so when I go to search, can't find them, think they are gone, and unless I open every folder to hunt for the hidden ones I end up either making another folder same name, or go without it. Nothing special, just plain and simple folder storage, is that a special program?

I don't know if this helps or not but often times, when I'm moving/copying from folder to folder, I open up two instances of the file explorer, side by side. In one window, I open the "from" folder, in the second window, I open the "to" folder. Makes it harder to miss that way.

Of course, dragging the file to the folder, making sure the target folder highlights, and carefully dropping it works too. But... I admit, I have missed that way and had to go searching too. :)

Chuggerguy, I don't mean to cut in as you will give her a better explanation I'm sure. When one is alone working in Win7 or 8 trying to save a document that it easily retrievable it is better to have someone show you.

Shaddy may be trying to put a simple document she has created or wants to save in one of the folders in folder library and wants to know how to retrieve it from the right folder. Sometimes you will aim your document to a folder called "documents" and instead it will become a subfolder which you don't want to happen. If you try to put it back into a main folder called "Documents" or "Photos" you get a message that says the destination is the same as the source. Then you end up with a long string and if collapsed u can't find it.

If side by side is your method, Chugger, then she will have to click on the task bar at the very bottom and on the RIGHT side click her mouse in an empty spot and a menu will show windows side by side.

Please don't let my input be the last for her on this issue.

Chugger, have found your idea to be the one to follow, BUT that said, I guess I will have to put FEWER folders in the original folder, that way, it seems anyway, not so crowded when I want to do the deed. That alone causes me a lot of grief, and expanding as much as I can, doesn't always help me. One does the best one can, and however it works for them, works out in the end. I just had hopes that there would be a grand solution so it would NEVER happen, and I can see unless I keep an eye on the folder, and an eye on the screen, and the third eye on what I am doing, perhaps can make it work. I do wish I had done more document work when I first got the machine, rather than just the surfing, and emailing. Seems I missed the boat on a lot of things. Oh, well, story of my life.

Would increasing the size or the spacing between the folder icons help?

I'm not sure what version of Windows you're running, this is for Windows 7 but I would think the same could be done in 8, 8.1, and 10?
