Without anymore to go on other than what you provided it's impossible to even hazard a guess as to what animal it was. You didn't give any details regarding appearance other than it seemed to have long hair around its head that stood up, which is common for most mammals if they are afraid or angry. Can you provide any other details, like size, color, face shape, tail length and whether the tail was bushy, or thin, ear shape, type of feet or paws, and type of teeth if you could see them? Knowing where this encounter took place, as in what part of the world, what state or region, would be useful as well.

Thanks for responding I'm sorry about the lack of details but it was very late at night so I was hard to see that much. I believe it was black and white, the size of a fox that is the most I know. Sorry about that. Also I live in southern Ontario if that helps. Thank you

It sounds to me that you had an encounter with a skunk and was lucky not to have come away smelling like one! A skunk is the only black-and-white animal, aside from a stray cat, that would be found in southern Ontario. Skunks can get fairly large; I had a de-scented domestic skunk whose back came up to my knees. I suspect that what you thought was hair standing up on the animal's head was in fact its bushy tail being raised right behind the head. Skunks normally keep their tails at roughly the same level as their backs but if they perceive a threat, or if they are playing, they with raise the tail, with the hairs all bristled, straight up in the air. Skunks will also stand up on their hind legs and then slam down their front paws to loudly stomp the ground as a final warning and sometimes even perform a hand-stand, especially the Spotted Skunk. Skunks have lousy eyesight, so it probably wasn't aware of your presence until it nearly blundered into you, while following some tantalizing food odor. Given how small a skunk's head is compared to the rest of its body, at the proper angle, a scared skunk would appear to have long hair raising up above its head, when that is really its tail, like this guy is doing: Scared Skunk

I agree with Sharon. It sounds like a skunk. They are common in urban areas. The fact that it took a step back is also very typical of a skunk that is startled by walking up to someone/something. It obviously didn't see you until it got right up on, stepped back and then put its tail up/forward to warn you before moving off to safety. I've seen them do this many times.

I really appreciate your response it did infact turn out to be a skunk. I never would have thought of that but when I saw your attached picture it was exactly the same. Again thank you so much for your responses.
