Anyone grow Pumpkin Patch in Zone 6 or lower

The nursery I have ordered from just informed me that they will be adding Pumpkin Patch to their list. Interesting looking rose but HMF doesn't any zones. Also there was a comment that it blackspots. Would appreciate your comments - health, vigor, size Zone?

Hi Sharlene,

I have Pumpkin Patch. I'm in zone 6 (Martinsburg, WV in the States) and it has survived two hard winters (polar vortex!) with extended periods of wind and daytime temperatures in mid-teens/low 20s and nighttime temperatures between 0 to 5 degrees F.

The winter of 2013-2014 was snowy and windy with those cold temperatures so there was some insulation. The winter of 2014-2015 was windy and cold but not very much snow to protect any of the roses. I find it very hardy, since mine is not protected except for a thin layer of mulch.

The color starts a strong tannish-orange and finishes a pale pink. I have posted quite a few pictures of my roses on my Facebook page and this link shows new and old flowers on my Pumpkin Patch: Pumpkin Patch Photo on my Facebook Page (Apologies if this is frowned upon!)

Mine blackspots if I don't spray regularly. I discovered that this year when, due to a knee injury, I couldn't get around very well to actually do my spray program. No mildew, but that's not usually an issue for me.

It bloomed very well the first year I had it, practically non-stop all summer. The past two years it has bloomed well in the spring and then sporadically throughout the summer. It earns its keep, in my opinion.

It will set hips like crazy so deadheading is a necessity or flower production is very limited.

Chris, thank you so much for the feedback! If it can withstand your winters, mine should be no problem. The BS worries me a bit but I think I might give it a try. The pics on your FB are great - thanks for the link.

Premature pumpkin harvest here. Heard a large crack in the back yard yesterday, and went outside to find my largest Big Max lying on the patio with a big gouge out of it. Either it got too heavy for the stem to support or the squirrels were playing with it. Anyway, it broke off and rolled down a slight slope and over the retaining wall fence. Decided it was nature's way of telling me to harvest and get the vine into the compost pile. The big pumpkin weighs 43.5 pounds and has a 54 " circumference. The smaller one is only 13.3 pounds with a 31" circumference. Loved growing these this year and will probably grow them again next year. 3 New England Pie pumpkin plants have produced 5 good sized pumpkins and I have 6 more that should be ready in a few weeks!

Old white roses...not as many as I wish. Aimee Vibert, as you know, which is probably even more of a gamble than KPV. I have White Pet and Marie Pavie, which are reliable must-haves, small and worth squeezing in somewhere, especially since they're both shade tolerant. White Pet has those adorable pink buds, and Marie is so graceful. A couple years ago I decided to focus on smaller roses to give myself room for more variety. So no MAC for now. One large (maybe old) white I grow and highly recommend is Darlow's Enigma. I will probably try to find room for Alba Semi Plena. I know a very old specimen growing in z6 and I really admire its simple elegance. I tried and discarded the portland Blanc de Vibert. It was grafted on multiflora and as odd as it sounds, I think this made it overly vigorous. The growth was ungainly and overwhelmed the lovely but hopelessly infrequent blooms, Portland blooms are short stemmed so if the foliage is too prominent the blooms get lost. I'd like to give it a try own root. Mme Pierre Oger is not completely white but might appeal to you. It's been incredibly hardy and vigorous for me. Delicate translucent white petals tinged with pink. I couple of my favorite "old style" whites are Fair Bianca and Francine Austin.

Growing persimmon trees in zone 6

Hi Tony (or anyone else who knows!) I recently moved from zone 9 to zone 6 and left my extensive collection of fruit trees. I'd like to grow astringent persimmon here for making hoshigaki Japanese dried persimmon. Are there any astringent varieties that produce LARGE fruit that will survive here? And where I can order from? I saw starkbros have Saijo but the fruit is small. It may need to be potted for the first year or two until I find a permanent property to put it in the ground. This last winter low temps were in the teens F generally, only a few days in single digits. So I think cold tolerant down to 0F should be ok. Thanks very much!

I wouldn't put a great deal of faith in The Spruce. It is not considered a reliable horticultural source but more of a cut and paste repetition of gardening info found elsewhere. Reliable sources - MOBOT, Dave's Garden (reports from actual gardeners), San Marcos Growers, Plant Delights Nursery and others - all list a zone 7 at the lowest with most reporting a zone 7b or 8 lower range. You can certainly push the envelop if you like but I would not put hard money on it surviving a zone 6B long term.

I also grow Pumpkin Patch in zone 5, in my warm sunny spot as a virtual zone 6, so I'd guess that's about where its limit is. It didn't survive in a different spot in my yard that gets a bit colder. Chris' comments apply to mine, except mine is a sporadic bloomer at best as a 2-year-old plant and pretty small so far. Mine dies to the ground in spring, which obviously affects the resulting growth in some roses. I don't notice mine blackspotting worse than the average flori or HT, but I'm pretty tolerant to such things. The east coast US is particularly harsh for BS, however, so Chris is dealing with tough conditions for BS.
