Need help identifying China Cabinet

We have this beautiful Cabinet like new we received from an old friend but have no idea what kind it is and want to try to find more information on it. Can anyone help? The original glass shelves are with us and the original lighting inside works. It is very, very heavy thinking maple? Anyone know the style or maker? thanks

The maker is usually identified by a brand or a sticker somewhere ... look inside everything.

Style ... vaguely "French provincial". Maybe "Italian provincial" in the designer's mind.

Age ... 1970s?

What is important for these pieces is how usable they are. If it fills a need, use it.

Well...it's better at a distance than it is up close! LOL! It has been seriously clobbered....modified... the lower panels are fir plywood....certainly not original....perhaps thost doors also held glass? and the inside bottom has had stuff added....the hunges are not original....nor are thoses wrought iron clasps. It was a nice country cubbarD....not walnut but perhaps poplar... unfortunatly I don't know how you would un do what has been done. Lindqa C

Good rescue! Japanese themed - that is Fujiyama - and fairly recent, probably Malaysian or Chinese made. It could look stunning if you painted it glossy teal, or painted and glazed it to enhance the carvings. Line the interior with a patterned kimono-look fabric. (totally over the top)

That would be a French Vitrine (curio cabinet) with a Vernis Martin finish.. kind of that golden "frosty" type finish. The legs are classic. Date wise, I would guess around 1900-1915, but could be a decade or so older. They CAN be quite valuable... 3-10,000 for a decent piece, however, the condition is pretty... well... it's rough! You're correct in not replacing the glass, especially if you still have the piece that is broken out. I can't even imagine what it would cost to replace. There are things you can do to prevent further deterioration, however, that would be only if you plan on keeping it for personal use because it WOULD diminish it's value. Insure it? That's a judgement call. In good condition, insuring it for 3-5,000 would be fair.

Its value is that of used furniture: what someone is willing to pay in your location. In my location it might be a couple hundred dollars tops, because other vintage styles are more popular. It may be the picture but the top and chest finishes appear to be slightly different. They look like they are a pair but possibly put together at different times? The lower half is much shinier.

Thanks I will look inside and out. It must be at least 40-50 years old for sure. Have any idea on how much they go for like new? General range?

40 years old would put it at 1970. On ebay they are ASKING close to $1000 for things like that....do idea what they are actually selling for. check completed sales and see what you find.
It was an expensive piece new, is a little out of style now but still very nice! Likely ti was maple or another hard wood with a "fruitwood" finish.

My fruitwood finish stereo unit is French Provincial & has similar top to the lower piece, purchased new in early l960's & fake doors on bottom have the curved look in center but no carved out areas. It was very popular then & I'm sure there were lot of variations! Love the top of it & the lights! Lovely !

I agree 60s or 70s is when that style was popular. Yours is nicely done--French provincial can look a little corny just as easily as it can look fabulous. I'd be surprised if there isn't a label inside a drawer or something. They aren't worth much around here currently--nothing old is unless it's MCM. But it's certainly pretty and practical enough to keep!
