what to expect 1st year planting raspberries
Comments (7)Hi Acaniglia- Just because you have last years canes, and they look dead, doesn't mean that they are necessarily dead. For example, my canes look pretty beige/grey at the moment, but soon, the bottoms will come back to life. If you prune the top of the cane, does it look grey/brown inside? i.e. dead? If you cut towards the bottom of the cane, does it look greenish/alive? Even if you prune out these canes, your plant will still likely be fine. But, I just don't want to see you prune off canes which would have given you berries otherwise. So, yes, I suspect they are likely this years floricanes... so leave them, get an early crop, and then prune them out. What varieties do you have? Where are you located? -Glenn...See MoreWhat Are Your Hopes and Goals for the Next Year?
Comments (26)My husband and I recently volunteered to revitalize a heritage rose garden located in a public arboretum in upstate NY. Our ultimate goal is renew and enlarge a small collection of old garden roses while strengthening the overall design of the site. We hope that the renewed garden encourages visitors to stroll around, relax, and savor these roses (that are for predominantly once-blooming). This year we hope to establish an overall plan, revitalize the soil and the roses that presently remain at the site. Idealists that we are, we hope to successfully nurture many more disease-resistant OGR varieties and practice sustainable gardening methods. Among our lofty aspirations, we would like to interrupt the rose monoculture with companion plantings that will complement the roses, and provide some interest when the bloom riot subsides. Incidentally, I am propagating OGR cuttings with abandon. (I recently posted to the exchange and propagation forum) I hope they will all thrive (so far, most have rooted) and that we will be able to use some in the Garden and also trade to obtain more cuttings (or rooted cuttings) of cultivars to propagate; I am not sure what our budget will allow for nursery stock in the coming year)....See MoreWhat was your best 1st year rose this year?
Comments (42)I am soooo confused. Exactly what is a sport? A sport is a spontaneous genetic mutation that has some quality distinctively different from the original. For example, someone in Chicago spotted a flower on their 'Peace' rose that was dramatically different in color than the original--that person rooted that bit of the plant, named the variant 'Chicago Peace' and it is in commerce today. Another mutation besides flower color would be growth habit--an example of a climbing sport would be 'Climbing Peace', which has the same flowers as the original 'Peace', but which has longer, "climbing" canes....See MoreHow much can I expect from S & S for next year?
Comments (8)Hi Gloria, I have kept track of all hostas in My Collection ...845 now surrounding our home....since I started back in 2002. It's a long process which takes a lot of time. I won't do it forever however...another 3 years or so MAX and that's it. I wanted to get the info as each hosta variety is growing...the eyes counting gives me an indication on the rate of growth associated with the size reached each year. I try to put as much info on My Website as I can. I just finished uploading 300 pics of my individual hosta variety. I'm glad to see that you like what I do, and hopefully my infos will help other hostalovers. Thanks for caring. Papou...See MoreDelawareDonna Zone 7A
