It sounds interesting, I love the warm look and feel of cork!

Prior to our 07 remodel, we had cork floors in kitchen, DR, entry and adjoining powder room for 18 years. I loved this floor! We didn't treat it with much care and didn't receive care information when the cork floors were installed. So, they received a far amount of water when washed, no added finishes or refinishing. We also have a 22 pound dog who managed to scratch up a lot of woodwork around window areas. The floors held up well. If you'd look close (like eyes a foot away), you could see many scratches from a variety of sources. The excess water caused some seams to curve up a little (only noticeable with bare feet). I really wanted to put in new cork floors, but, got talked out of it by a KD who said colors/patterns weren't right for our new look. We put in porcelain tiles and standing on them hasn't yet been a problem. I probably don't stand on them for more than 90 minutes at a time. If I were to put in cork again, I'd use the floating kind and panels or planks. When replacing the old cork floor, everyone was predicting big problems if we had to deal with glued down panels. The old floor came up easy because no glue. Cork is much more forgiving on uneven subfloors than tile. It took about a days work to even out the subfloor for tile (involved replacing some plywood and a lot of sanding). One of my friends just put in a high end glued down cork tile and they now wish that they had gone with the floating option.

Oh, the floor stain. I about had a nervous breakdown last weekend selecting the floor stain. We finally choose Fruitwood (minwax) and I can't say I'm 100% sold yet. Everyone besides me thinks it's perfect. Anyway, my cabinets are white with a glaze that makes them creamy, and the island is maple with a stain and a glaze on it. Here's a pic with several stain samples. The ones shown are (L to R) golden oak, fruitwood, early american and the one across the bottom is provencial. The one I selected definitely looks best with the island - I just love dark wood. Wish I'd have selected Provencial. All are minwax stains. I took some pics since the floors were stained this week, but they aren't in photobucket yet. Will try to post tonight. Also, there was a similar question a couple of days ago. You saved it! Awesome! This is great. You will need: 1. Elmer's wood glue 2. Wax paper or something non-sticky like that 3. A heavy shoe or something else to add weight I would figure out how the chunk lines up. Once you have that figured out, you can then add a small amount of wood glue (just enough to squish up to the surface of the cork...but nothing more) to the raw cork on the back of the chunk. A. Carefully place the chunk back into place. Allow the glue to squish up. B. Us a slightly damp cloth to wipe away the excess glue. C. Place the non-sticky paper (wax or backing paper is PERFECT) over the chunk D. Place the heavy shoe (or pot, or book, etc) over top the wax paper - make sure the weight is over the chunk E. Leave in place until the next day. I like the idea of a shoe because it gives the VISUAL that people should walk around the patched area but if they happen to kick it, it doesn't hurt. Once the glue has dried, you should have a nicely patched floor. If you feel it needs some colour touch up, then go ahead and find a permanent marker (water based markers can work...but they wash off as you clean the floor) in the right colour and do your best to help it blend in. Crayola is AMAZING when it comes to colour choices. I always keep them around for things like this. Done. This is why cork is SOOOO cool! It is DIY friendly and super easy to fix.
