My jades: pics and a question about jade aesthetics
Comments (8)Thanks Mike, I was thinking I'd like to try different things with the different plants. Get one of them bare and well shaped (preferably pointed upwards) with some large leaves on one end. The larger, bushier one I'll leave the way it is. I enjoy all of the greenery on it and of course it gives me great cuttings to start new ones. Thanks for the advice about the soils, what do you use Mike? I only recently switched to a cactus/succulent mix because it's drier. Silly me, I've been a one bag of soil (standard houseplant mix) kind of guy which has led to the suffering of some of my plants. Reading up on small leaf jades, I've found they do well in Phoenix (my hometown!) so I'm guessing I could stand to water them a lot less. I'll keep them in the sun and see what happens. Thanks!...See MoreCommon Jade
Comments (3)I saw a Gollum jade with a similar pattern of variegation. I was curious about it because it looked to me like it would be difficult for meristem tissue to produce transverse bands of yellow (as opposed to longitudinal). I ended up not buying the plant because I was worried that the coloration might be due to a mosaic virus or some other disease. If anyone else knows what's up, the biologist in me is really curious about how this plant works!...See Morequestion for Greenman28/Josh

Comments (11)Dear Grace (Sugi_C) [don't you love the monikers we choose for ourselves?], Thank you for the mountain of information, it is most welcome. Josh/Greenman's enthusiasm is infectious, and I hope his knowledge is, too. I'm still torn between repotting or not. My plant seems to have a tiny bit of root peeping out from a drainage hole, so my concern is less potting volume but overall pot depth. I have the pot propped up so that the root (if that's what it is) will not get submerged and rotten. Also, I have it in a standard commercial potting mix but it would seem more suitable in something grittier and crunchier, so I'm thinking maybe orchid mix? So, I'm leaning toward repotting into a 6 inch diameter about 9 inch depth pot sometime soon. It seems from your and Josh's pix that pot material is immaterial -- I see plastic, clay, glazed ceramic -- even fabric pouch! -- so my propbably choice would be a nice clean plastic placed in an attractive glazed cermaic cachepot. She's a houseplant, after all. Again, miliardi grazie! Carolyn...See Moreshawneerie17
