When one Agave isn't enough...
Comments (19)Stush, trust me on this one, It's an Agave Joe hoax. Looks exactly like hoovb and Denise's , I'll tell you a secret too stush on how I got them , I actually had to do a little detective work to catch this guy, I had to make a few phone calls and finally got permission to remove the pups which were all removed with roots, ( that's a big plus,). I tried to give them something in Exchange but they insisted they don't want to add anything to their collection right now cause they don't have the time, (bummer.) And if I see any other plants growing feel free to help myself. Wow!!! Kinda like a blank check. I was very thankful and cleaned up the area also I was so appreciative. He actually rents that house out and doesn't even live in it that's why I had to make phone calls but my persistence paid off. Stush, those are very expensive agave's on the streets, and in the stores I've seen them in and their not aS common as most others, just happy to be able to help with the clean up around the hens and snatch up the chicks in the process. Plus they are simply gorgeous. Greg...See MoreAgave sisalana variegata- Do you own one?
Comments (13)Hi there, I used to have 2 sisalanas which I grew from pups collected in Lanzarote, Canary Isles. They each grew to around 2.5 feet high and were doing just fine till we had a terribly cold/long/snowy winter a few years back and temps plummeted to -18C. The plants were all potted and tucked away in the g/h but they didn't survive, unfortunately. They had vicious spines like daggers on the ends of the leaves that always managed to stab me somewhere! Have never seen the variegated type...they do look good. Gill UK...See MoreMy agave has the measles!
Comments (6)Well, I talked with my neighbor who happens to be a PhD botanist. He told me to not throw out the kid just because he has acne. So it's not measles! He pretty much told me to go get my sharp knife and mix up the copper spray. I'll also get my cinnamon and long sleeved shirt! So that's the plan for now. Let's hope he is right - and he usually is. He said all the rain we had last month and our still high humidity has made things ripe for fungal infestations. And in the daylight, we could see that the "slime" is actually oozing from the plant wounds....See MoreWhen Agaves bloom . . .
Comments (103)Rina, I had that plant for about 5 years. So I was surprised it bloomed already! I have planted one of the pups in mama's place. Doesn't it look small and lonely? It's really almost a foot tall, but it has been a little squished under the other plant. I am going to replace a dying pup over at my neighbor's house. They are in Wisconsin, so they don't even know it is dying. As for all of the other bulbils . . . well, I'll be potting up a bunch to see how it goes. I'll try some of the highly variegated bulbils, too. I have been talking with the city parks, hoping they have a few spots that need an Agave - or 10! Nothing near the kids' play areas, of course, but some of the roads leading into the parks are bare. Just hope they agree with my vision. LOL Here's a funny side story -- when we were taking out the stump, Charlie stepped on one of those 3 green Echeveria agavoides to the right of the pup. I yelled, so he moved his foot and stepped on another one! Surprisingly, they look fine today. I think it is because we are in the dry season and they were a little rubbery instead of firm with plenty of water. Anyhoo - Charlie dodged a bullet there. LOL...See Morenanzjade z5 MA
