Brother lost his battle

My wonderful brother died yesterday after a battle with stomach cancer.

He'd been diagnosed back in May and given 3 to 6 months to life.

He was truly a "big brother" in every sense of the word and I feel
like a huge part of me has been ripped out. I know he's at peace now,
but it sure hurts.

He protected me many times from my Dad's wraith until he left home to
go into the service. Even after he got married he was always there for
me.

His wife is more than a sister-in-law to myself and George. They both
have always been accepting of our relationship and came to our 25th
anniversary celebration.

I'm glad I got to see him when I went back to MI in June for a committee meeting for our 50th.

I know he's at peace now and that's a comforting thought.

I'm so sorry for your loss Secsteve. Loosing someone you love is so hard even when you know they are at peace. How fortunate you are to have had such a wonderful relationship and big brother. I hope you and your sister in law will continue to be close as well and can provide support for each other. I will keep you and your loved ones in my thoughts and prayers. (((Hugs)))

So sorry for your loss. I hope that you and your sil can continue to support each other through this difficult time. I lost my brother, also to cancer, and miss him so much. Again, so very sorry.

I have been trying to help my husband. He hasn't shown any grief since the day he had to see his father's body at the funeral home. At the funeral he was the only dry-eyed person. I have been doing everything around the house, and anything I can think of to make things easier on him. But I am about ready to snap. NOt at him but at the insensitivity of other people. It is crazy. First, the my FIL's sister (in her 50's) posted an invite to his funeral on facebook. It was supposed to be a private family graveside service because my husband's mother is in a very fragile state right now. It was such a shock and she is not doing well. So two days before the funeral it is found out that his family now has to get together enough food to feed about 50 ppl because my FIL's sister invited all these people to the service and get together afterward. They did NOT need the extra stress of having to do this!! And a simple thing- my parents decided to send flowers my MIL's house even though they really don't know her. My mother asked ME to send them (because I could pick out something she'd like I guess) so I called a local florist and asked that the flowers be delivered to the house on the day of the funeral. The florist calls me back the day of the funeral to say they couldn't get the flowers I wanted in that day so they would be delivered the next day. I didn't want to argue so I said ok. There are more important things. But then I get another call that evening saying the flowers wouldnt' be delivered until TWO days after the funeral. I spoke with the owner who was VERY rude. When I said the flowers were for a funeral he corrected me and said "No they are not for a funeral, they are being delivered to a home address." Yes, dumbass but they have a sympathy card with them. He then asked what the address was even though I'd already given it to the person who took the order previously. He went on to say it wasn't his fault (I wasn't even upset at this point) that his supplier was late and all he could do was have me select another arrangement and he "Might" be able to deliver it by the next day. I found another florist and called him back and asked him to cancel the order. He said he'd already made arrangements to get the flowers I needed (still two days late) and I told him I just wanted to cancel the order please and he said whatever and hung up on me!! Stupid, but I just broke down crying. And at the service, the strangest thing was that my MIL did not want to watch her husband's urn be buried in the dirt (her kids and grandkids wanted to watch) and I definately don't blame her. She is still thinking of him as a person who is alive or has characteristics of being alive and to see that would just kill me. She started bawling and told everyone she had to get out of there and NOT one of her kids escorted her away. MY FIL's sister who posted the thing on facebook took her away. It also seems that my MIL does not want to hear any good things about her husband from anyone. SHe is very angry toward him (probably for leaving her alone) and if anything nice is said she gets mad. So I say nothing. I just don't know what to do.

It will be 2 years in August when my little sister died. She is 11 months younger than me and my only sibling. She was 38 when she died. We were always close, my husband, kids and I moved from Virginia (husband was in the Navy) to Colorado to be with her and her family. We were here for 9 months before she died in her sleep suddenly. We were barely talking to eachother because of her lifestyle which eventually lead to her death. (alcoholism) As I said, we were always close, but in the middle of a hard patch in our relationship. I was able to say "I love you" and hug her 4 days before her death but you could tell we were still a bit angry at eachother. Sibs are like that. I beat myself up, day in and day out for not being a better big sister. I was supposed to take care of her. I still have those days when I want to turn back time, I can't. The days are farther between now. I try to concentrate on the great times we had instead of the fights. Remember, siblings fight. I will admit, its difficult to move past that, and a part of it will probably remain with me for the rest of my life. I try to concentrate on the good things I did for her in our life. Like getting her clothes down from the closet because she was so short, or turning on the water because she couldnt reach the sink.(when we were kids) Moving to Colorado to be with her. I thank God I had those 9 months with her. We had fun together until the end. I talk to her all the time and still apologize to her. I bet if you think REAL hard you can come up with many more times you were a GREAT brother rather than not. Please know, I know your pain. It doesn't go away, but It does ease up a bit. I was and still when I have my bad days, am a b---- to my family. I control this by taking a shower! In there no one can here me cry or yell or swear or the many other feelings I have. It helps me. I also write to my sister, but I find talking to her helps more. I look at her picture and talk to her. I hope this helps you know there are those of us who know what youre going through. Please keep in touch and this is a great place to vent, or just talk about him.

bronwynsmom - I am sorry for your loss and can relate to what you are now going through. Isn't Hospice wonderful! In the last 18 months, I have lost both of my parents (85&86) and a sister(59) all at a Hospice facility. They had stays of 2 weeks, 3 weeks and 3 days. We will forever be grateful to Rainey House of the Upstate for their gentle caring. ;) My father died first, and then my mother 5 months later. Both fairly suddenly after a diagnosis of cancer. My sister became ill in the spring with MDS and 8 weeks later she was gone. Been tough! My sister, sister-in-law (sometimes my brother and brother-in-law) and I starting cleaning out my parents house about 2 months after my mother's death. The only reason we did so was because someone came to us and wanted to buy the house. It was hard work, but we got the job done AND had an estate sale within 2 weeks of starting. I would love to know what words of wisdom you have for others having to go through the hardship in the future. One realization that has come to me is ...had we not cleaned the house out early, we would have had a much harder time with it. You see, we were still in shock and emotions had not taken hold thoroughly. I am just now starting to grieve and come to terms with my parents passing. What a lovely tribute to your mother while sharing her life with friends and family. I will be thinking of you in the next few days as you complete the task of settling your mothers estate.

I'd be tempted to put up electric fencing of some kind, leaving it turned off, and watch and wait until they are on it then turn it on! Unfortunately it won't kill them . . . . I had hares in my latest garden; to begin with we were (whispering) "oh look - it's a hare - oh wow!". This changed after loads of plants eaten got down to nothing, such destruction; after that the reaction turned to a visceral gutteral "eaurghhh" yelled at high volume accompanied by stone throwing! And we did rig up a Heath Robinson electric fence, hare-height, with 3 strands of wire . . . . it worked pretty well, not sure how possible that would be with squirrels tho. So I can really sympathise with you. Have you looked at the US parts of this forum? I believe they discuss squirrels extensively. I might even look myself, I am in Boston MA for a year and I have seen squirells in the trees that surround the back of the house where I have decks to garden on for the duration. I wonder, do they eat seedlings and young plants? I do commiserate with you, but don't give up hope, keep trying different things and keep up your enthusiasm! All the best Claire

Hi secsteve,

I offer my deep condolences for your grievous hurt and deep pain.

When we love much ... the hurt is great when it is broken. But none of us would hold ourselves back from being involved in such a loving relationship.

As you recall your times together, I hope that those memories will help you heal and find peace in your heart.

From the sound of things, it may be that your father is no longer available, but if he is, and some of the earlier wrath persists, I hope that you may be able to resolve some of the differences and build a happier relationship. Life is too short ... and when we persist with anger and bitterness, the main one that we hurt is ourselves.

I offer my good wishes to you, your sister-in-law, and family, and some prayers on behalf of all of you at this difficult time.
