Comments (108)I wish I had your optimism Comettose..... It seems like all the people moving out in this direction think the countryside is a place to do all those things they weren't allowed to do in the city. (loud cars, 4wheelers, fireworks, etc.) Its getting close to impossible for people like you and me to buy country land anymore, since the farmers would rather sell it to developers. Its a real dilemma for them I suppose......sell it to another farmer for $3,000 an acre or to a developer for $20,000/ac. Then the area plan commission and the county commissioners think they are leaving a wonderful legacy by building malls and subdivisions. There is a place 8 miles south of us that was all farmland. 1,700 acres were sold to a developer who is putting in a city. The commissioners who approved this were so proud of themselves. And the people in the small town close to us are so apathetic, no one but me complained. I don't understand how people in neat little towns and rural people can only think in terms of "gee....isn't this great........a Home Depot only 5 miles away now.......and a Starbucks! .......and......." Why did they ever choose to live out here in the first place if they don't mind this "takeover"? The only terms they think of is convenience and having more and more of the same things, only closer. How do you reach those kinds of people? They are so disconnected with nature that it isn't even part of their experience anymore. Then the developers promise to make these huge parks for the masses.(after they've bulldozed the natural landscape). Developers and city officials are also trying to connect all the cities in this region with "rails to trails" paths so people can ride bikes through the countryside and see our "rural heritage". What a joke. Then they talk about building little shops all along these paths, since people "need to eat, and buy souveneirs". I really feel like an alien. No, actually.......I feel like all of them are the aliens! We have a paradise here.......and what are we doing with it?? I understand that the sole purpose of every organism on this planet is to reproduce. That's what its all about. But mankind seems to be doing it in a way that is so much more destructive than the other spieces. I'll get off my soapbox now....See MoreMy weekend excitement
Comments (23)OMG PIM, I acn only imagine! LOLOL! I am truly not laughing at you, but the way you told the story is rather entertaining. I am not afraid of spiders, actually it is sort of the reverse. I find them fascinating! My ex-BF was attempting to write horror stories and decided to get a Tarantula to keep in a vivarium to "inspire" him. After he got the thing, he somehow decided he was going to make some extra money by breeding them and selling the babies to the local pet store. Next thing I knew, there were 3 vivariums and one of the spiders did make an egg ball (or whatever you call them). Now bear in mind, he was terrified of them which meant whenever they had to be fed or the vivariums cleaned then I was elected. I really didn't mind at all since I thought they were neat. Well, the babies started to hatch and were just beginning to crawl all over. Unfortunately, he had failed to replace the regular screen top (about 1/2 inch "holes") with a finer mesh. He went in a few mornings later to check the brood and not a single baby was there. He asked me if I new what happened to them and when I went to look, I found a couple of the babies on the wall and floor behind the vivarium. Sure enough, all 300+ had climbed out of the tank, through the screen and were all over the room that we used as an office. Needless to say, he came completely unglued at the thought of all those baby spiders crawling around the house.... I caught the ones I could find, but unfortunately most of them ended up dying. I was vacuuming up dead baby spiders for weeks it seemed. He ended up taking the adults back to the pet store and that was the end of the Tarantulas. And as far as phobias.... mine is snakes. I don't want them anywhere near me or my house. YUCK! Alexa...See MoreWow! What an awesome commercial by WestJet!
Comments (10)It is so rare these days for companies to do anything but the bare minimum for their customers. To see a company doing something so fantastic for their customers is great. No one knows what financial shape some of these people may be in, just because they happen to be flying does not mean they are wealthy, their prices are very competitive. Several of them were students that wished for a plane ticket home for the holidays. How wonderful for them. This kind of treatment for their customers should bring happy customers and return customers. That is what it is all about after all, keeping your customers satisfied! I don't understand how anyone could find fault with a company saying thank you to their customers and rewarding them for picking their company. Their customers are not the only ones they share their generosity with. Just because someone has not bothered to find out about their gracious programs does not mean they are not doing other fantastic things!!! "At WestJet, we've always been about people and our investment in the community is no exception". WestJet and Hope Air bring Canadians closer to medical care. WestJet helps in Haiti WestJet is providing the gift of flight in support of travel wish granting activities nationwide for Make-A-Wish there are LOTS more but I am sure to some that is all just another publicity stunt!...See MoreDriving on the "other" side. How hard is it?
Comments (21)I have done quite a bit of "wrong-side" driving. It is not hard to learn and do it. I have driven both right side and left side steering wheel cars on the left side of the road. The problem comes in, I believe, when there is a crisis and you have to make a snap decision. Instinct takes you one way, and it's the wrong way. You are more likely to have an accident after you have been there for a couple weeks and are kind-of used to driving. You start to go on auto-pilot. Funny thing, about a year after I was back in the U.S. after having been away driving on the left for a couple of years, I suddenly realized that I had to consciously think about what side of the road I was supposed to be on. To the average American, the left side of the road just feels wrong, and they instinctively know where to be. I had lost that instinct....See MoreMtnRdRedux
