Can you repot a phal that has a keiki on the spike?

My neighbor has an orchid with a keiki on the spike. I can repot orchids but I am not sure about this. The keiki is too small to repot by itself. however, the mother plant needs fresh orchid mix. So, will repotting the Mom with keiki attached to the spike hurt either the mother plant or the keiki. My instincts tell me to wait to repot mom until the keiki has enough roots to survive on it's own. I am not an orchid expert, so can one of you experts someone please let me know what to do. The Mom looks okay but has been stagnant for 2 years - no new leaves and no new blooms. Just the little keiki. Thanks
