Alocasia Frydek babies - should I separate them?

Quite by surprise, I have survivors from last year's catastrophe. And I had gone through the soil several times, looking for those little bumpy things (forget the name right now), and had almost given up. But I kept watering a couple of the little pots I put the soil in, and once it got steamy this summer, up came 3 of them!

At least I think there are 3. One is in one pot and doing fine.

The other little pot seems to have 2 in it. They were so close together that at first I thought they were one plant, but now I am not so sure. They are growing separately -- these grow out of a center stalk, right?

So, if that means there are 2, should I separate them? They are only about 3 inches high now, with only 2 or 3 leaves.

If I should separate, do I do it now or wait? I put them inside because it is warmer at night. I'm not sure they're completely happy - might be getting a little leggy. Today I put them back out to see if the light is the problem.

don't separate, there is no need for now , seedlings are often grown together.

let them grow 1st year like this, then when they slow down (and most likely drop all leaves) in winter (dry season) , you can separate in early spring.

you get slightly cooler temps in winter in so-cal too? when soil temp is dropping to 65F and below they slow down and need to be kept on a dry side. but if they drop all leaves then stop watering for a month and then separate/repot. mature tubers can be dry for sev months, but with young tubers it is recommended to restart them after a month, or they might dry out too much and die/rot.

seedlings get easily water-logged: absorb too much water and then you'll see darker streaks on leaves and gutation (drops from the tip of the leaf) - and it can lead to necrosis of the leaf (yellows in patches and then leaf dies). so it's not a bad idea to have 2 seedlings together in a very small pot as it'll remain drier this way.

to restart from tuber they need very hot temps and high humidity. heating mat helps a lot, as you don't need to wait for outside temp to rise.

Grey, Rooting babies that have been separated is not difficult. Most people seal them in plastic bags, like sandwich bags. I like to use a dome because I think it is easier to check on their progress. The added humidity from the bag/dome will benefit them greatly. If you can put them on a heat mat that also helps. Make sure that they have a light source and are evenly moist and in a short time you should have roots. A gentle tug on a leaf will tell you if roots are developing. Suckers are also rooted this way as they usually have no root system. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions. Linda

Personally, I seperate the babies as soon as I can get ahold of them and they have enough 'root' to stick into soil. The sooner you pluck them from the momma leaf, though, the closer you have to watch them until they develop actual "roots." So far, I haven't lost any babies this way, but I've only been raising violets for about seven months or so-- so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Ok... So... The big tubers, are tubers! They prefer to be mostly buried in rich fast draining soil. You should maybe save the one that popped off already, if it still exists. In you unending season, anytime is fine to repot, best done when the plants semi dormant or dormant! You won't need to cut anything at all, I use the hose to blast the soil free! It's more gentle than ripping them apart... What you will find will mostly be long succulent ropey white roots, with a few fine feeder roots, dark roots can be removed or left intact, dead roots should be removed... You'll also find offset tubers in there too, if you saw my pic of them, you know what to look for, they will look like little nuts in the soil... Split them off, just a touch will snap them, dirt thru the old soil, it may be FULL of them! I'd plant them with the large tubers, it'll fill the pot quicker. DONOT let the small offsets dry out! The bug tubers can take a beating but the pups can't! Easy on the water until the plant starts growin again... Hope you see this, and it helps!

@AnneCecilia...those vented lids do look great and at a great price too. @Amy...mostly these are leaves from round robins, a mix of standards and semis @ Vikki...thanks for that tip. Actually I have also noticed that sometimes the leaves under the dome become mushy and have lost some too. Maybe next time will try without the lid, though I have never tried wicking. I usually water from the bottom or from the top. But I guess doing wicks may save me time. I always get confused about what kind of yarn to buy and am lazy at starting the set up. Anyway, the lid is propped up partially, the soil did seem a bit dry after the holidays, so I watered very little. I am again out of town for a week, so will open up the lid completely after I am back. Thanks everyone!! Cooks
